Bagged Salad Warning....

Dragonfliz79 Jul 17, 2006 11:29 AM

Not Sure if some of you use bagged salad but I recently read this.

Is the convenience worth the risk? Beware the "Bag Salad"!

NBC Dateline did a documentary on cut-up lettuce and spinach packaged in plastic bags. They took us through the whole process and talked about how the Ecoli bacteria is now showing up in the salad mix in bags. They don't know yet how the Ecoli got in, but they do know that deaths and serious sicknesses are occurring in many states. One woman told about how her child was near death from the lettuce and was sick for a long time. They warned us not to buy any bag salads until they find out from the investigation what is causing this contamination. The Dole Company has recalled their bags. See the link below.

Please pass this one on...This is really pretty scary.

an important thing to remember when feeding your uro is to make sure that everything in its diet is very nutrient-dense. bagged salads generally don't offer nutrient dense food usefull to uros. romaine can be useful because of a high water content, but aside from that you'd generally be better off buying specific greens individually. nutrient dense greens include collard greens, kale, and bok choy. they're cheap, the're available, they're not normally found in bags, and they're best for your uro.
and no matter where your food comes from, its always wise to wash it before it gets to your uro. think about it, you spend so much time creating a perfect environment in a tank for your uro, why wouldn't you thoroughly wash anything that you introduce?
it still is quite an alarming news report... just buy your produce fresh... and wash it...

The dark greens I feed my uro and most others use to feed their uro's are curly endive, escarole, dandelion greens and bok choy. You need to limit their intake of collard greens and kale as well as broccoli. You shouldn't feed spinach, beet greens, swiss chard or cabbage. All of these either bind nutrients or can cause metabolic problems over time.

It sounds convienent to have a ready made salad, but how am I supposed to know if there is any residual pesticides or now bacteria.

I only give organically grown local stuff (still washed of course). Heck, my kids eat better than I do...
