coccidia and probiotics

spec Aug 02, 2003 05:31 PM

I'm currently on the second round of coccidia treatments for my beardie Zeffer. The vet prescribed three treatments of Albon. 7 days on 7 days off. I was reading through the forums today and noticed something about probiotics, but other than the mention of yogurt and something they dont carry at my Petsmart nothing else was reccomended. What else is there out there that is safe to give beardies? Does this appear to be the right treatment method for coccidia? and would it be safe to use parazap on the week off?

That seems a little much to me. I usually run 7 days on 7 off , do a fecal exam and if I still have some 3 on 3 off and do a fecal exam if you still have it at that point you need to look towards your husbandry if your husbandry is perfect than I run another course of 7 on 7 off

Are you cleaning the cage out completely every single day with 10% bleach?

Are you using paper towel or news paper as a substrate?

Using plastic furniture so that it can bleached easily every single day

The key to ridding coccidia is keeping a sterile environment free from it if you have crix left in the tank after feeding remove them or better yet feed in a differant place cause the crix will feed on dragon poop and re infest

Be sure to clean out the poop asap to lower the risk of the dragon running through it.

A lot people think that a “natural amount of coccidia is ok” I do not I also believe that if crickets carry coccidia that the strain they carry can not be transmitted to dragons. However I am not so certain about the strain of coccidia that dragons carry being able to infect other reptiles.

I have three dragons that have 0 coccidia cells in the fecal exam now and I do weekly fecals on these guys mostly cause I do my own and it is easy for me to do so.

Parazap is fine to use during the treatment as it will boost the immune system and help you fight the bug better.

The probiotics will help restore the natural bacteria found in the dragons gut that aid with digestion ect. However I do not know what bacteria is found in dragon guts so I can not say with 100% confidence that this will help in that respect I have herd many people use it and been happy with it.

I've used Natures Bounty, Acidophilus just recently. Bought it at my local pharmacy. I cut the top of the capsule off, put the liquid in a syringe and administer. I think CheriS said you need to administer 3 drops of 2 billion active lactobacillus. Since, Natures Bounty is in the millions not billions it is probably ok to administer the whole capsule which is more than 3 drops. CheriS didn't say it would be harmful and it would make sense since the active Lactobacillus is lower. Hope that made sense. Its late.
Take care,
Karen
P.S. One of my dragons that has been sick for a while actually ate today after administering the Acidophilus the day before.
