Snakes of (certain) colors...

DrDorothy Jul 17, 2006 06:14 PM

Hi, all!

I've just found this forum, and this is my first time posting. I have a young Black Rat Snake female who is a very welcome addition to our family -- I named her Persephone Delphine. (She's not my first snake, but is our only one at this time.)

My husband has decided that snakes make great pets (or at least very interesting ones) and has suggested that maybe I should get another snake or two. He suggested a red-colored snake, and a white-colored snake, since we already have a black one. (The trio of white, red and black hold symbolic significance for us.)

I am pleased that he's interested in having another snake or two, though I've not decided yet whether to do so yet. But I thought I might as well begin my research. Can the members of this forum recommend red-colored and white colored non-venomous snakes (ideally more-or-less solid colored) that might do well in a home environment? We live in the temperate Pacific Northwest of the United States.

Hello--
A leucistic texas or black rat would definately be white snakes. Perhaps a reduced black milk or kingsnake for red?
Just ideas...

Thank you for your reply, Althea. I had no idea that Black Rat Snakes could be so white -- how lovely!

I had difficulty finding a picture of the kind of snake your suggested for a red-colored one, but in the process found another canditate: the bloodred corn snake. Another beautiful snake...

I have no information on whether there are any health issues to be concerned about with these genetics, nor much about temperament, any special care needs, etc. -- but its a start! I'm encouraged -- I figured it might be difficult to find a truly red snake, and likewise difficult to find a truly white snake without pink eyes -- I prefer more "normal"-looking eyes.

I also have virtually no information as yet on reliable, careful breeders, etc. My black rat female was a gift to me from a friend. Research, research, research...

(I'm open to suggestions...)
