Bad egg---bonus???

crimsonking Jul 18, 2006 04:48 AM

When I was just about to toss the shells of my recently hatched goini this morning, it included a "bad egg"...
Well as you can see, it contains a live snake and he's ready to join us.
Now I don't know what he looks like or if there'll be any problems yet, but I'm glad something told me to wait on him!!
Thing is...that black tip and 1/6 of egg is hard as a rock and looks like one too.
What kept me from tossing it in the first place was the nice white color of the rest...

...my original count on the mass was 16. Well, I looked at them in a week and tried again to count (all stuck tgether) and saw that one black spot (complete with fuzz)at the bottom and assumed it was a failed egg, so I revised my count to 15. If this guy makes it out today (4 days after the start of hatch)then I was right all along

What makes most eggs go bad and dry/shrivel up?

From my limited experiences it seems that most eggs that fail were doomed from the start. That is, they were not fertile or otherwise ready to take on the world outside the mother. I look at them as a living, viable, organism from the start. "Sick" ones do not make it.
Anyway, obviously there are a bunch of "keeper error" problems that can destroy otherwise healthy eggs. Heat, humidity/lack of both, chemicals, movement, etc. can all cause eggs to fail at just about any time during the time from lay to hatch.

So when this snake misbehaves, you are justified in telling it that it came from a bad egg?

LOL-I just had an integrade mex black X cal egg that looked like the bad end of that one all over-only worse! The entire egg was brown, moldy and caved in. All the others had hatched when out comes a perfect baby-only about 2/3 the size of it's clutchmates! It fed almost immediately and is doing fine.

Well, that's cool! I have had my share of "bad eggs" hatch over the years for sure. Even now, I keep nearly all that look bad when laid for at least a few weeks...
A few years ago I had one much as you desribe, black all over- and shriveled.. I removed it from the rest and stuck it in a deli cup to toss out later...
You guessed..Not only did that mexicana hatch with NO medium in the cup or other "help", but is one of my favorite mexicanas today...
