BoaFanatic7 Jul 18, 2006 09:49 AM

Don't know where they came from...just popped out of nowhere...haven't brought in a new snake for months,,,the last one i kept in quarantine and all was fine...any ideas how this could have happened??
And what should I do to get rid of them..

Thanks for any advice.

I've had very good luck using Provent a Mite...both as a treatment for mites and as a preventative. Works wonderfully!

One of my recent acquisitions showed up with mites. Didn't see them on initial inspection. Luckily was contained to the quarantine room. Upon further inspection I found travellers a few slots away in the rack from ground zero so they were already spreading...UGH!!! All totalled, I only saw a half dozen mites so it was by no means a "infestation" yet. I had been bringing in several animals and was half expecting to get mites so I had already bought a can of provent-a-mite. I used it one time on all the quarantine room cages. It worked great, have not seen one more mite since the initial couple of days.

I have heard they can travel on you, been to another herp area, store, friend, messed with a wild snake etc.? Also that they could come in on live feeder from a pet store etc.? Maybe you had all along and just took a while to see?

If the snake has a bad infestation, I remember something about vegetable oil would kill all mites on the snake safely. just lube em up in a seperate tub while your cleaning/treating the cage. IMO, only necessary when you have lots of mice or maybe a larger animal with more hiding space between the scales. My recent experience was confined to hatchlings.

Oh yeah, good luck picking up the oiled snake...I would think kinda like a greased pig without anything to grab.

not sure how you got them but her is how i get rid of them. first take the snakes and wsoak them in warm water with dish soap. then thouroughly clean the enclosure with bleach water. Then get some provent o mite and spray the enclosure and the substrate. then repeat this every 2 weeks til the mites are gone.

Also i found some bug spray at walmart that has the same active ingredient as proventomite that last as long as proventomite and works the same without harming my snakes. It is made by Sawyers and i found it in the camping section. It has permethrin as the active ingrediant and smells exactly the same as proventomite. I have used it for a while now and never had any problem at all and it works great on mites and it is only 6 bucks compared to 23 bucks for provent o mite

this is all i do and i never see any mites after treating this way
