Lizzy (Pyro Pyro) feeding

FunkyRes Jul 18, 2006 03:46 PM

Lizzy is a femal purchased from VMSherp - she's from last years hatchlings ('05).

First - an animated gif a friend made from the delicup photo they had of her:

-=-

The first time I fed her, I let her eat in peace. Two of the pinkies were a little too big (she tried) so I fed them to another snake. One she was able to down, but one didn't seem enough for a snake of her length (they have really small heads for their length)

I got her two more today:

Interestingly - she isn't trying to constrict her prey. My juvenile Ca. Kings didn't when I first got them, but they started to after only a few months. Lizzy will be a year old in 10 days.

Is lack of constriction characteristic of f/t raised, or do pyros just pick it up later in life?

Anyway - she's a gorgeous snake. At least to my eyes

I got this one from VMS herps at the end of 04. She was born 8-8-04

She's gorgous.
How big is she?

I haven't measured mine, but she's at around 20 inches (the length of the tank, a standard 10 Gallon). Hard to tell - I have chosen not to handle her heavily yet, she's still rather new to me. Other than this feeding and the last, when she's out - she rather quickly receeds to a hiding spot when I enter the herp room.

I fed her one pinkie on Thursday (the day I have her three, two of which were too big). Sunday I gave f/t to the Cal King in the tank next to her - and she must have smelled them because she came out and was hunting about, but retreating quickly if I entered the room.

The two love she ate today - I put them in and she came out right away, but did not consume them for several hours, and them consumed them both in a matter of minutes. The second one went down faster because the started with the head - the photographed pinky was the bigger of the two, and she ate it starting at the wrong end. But she did get it down.

Have you ever had any problems with two kings side by side in tanks ? I am considering getting an albino Ca king F to put next to my M Ruthven . Both tanks will be side by side the Albino Ca king will be a baby in smaller tank my ruthven in his 30 gallon but not sure if thats a good idea.
My ruthven very tame calm dont want to ruin that.

Sometimes I put a partition between tanks, to keep them from viewing each other, especially if there is a large size difference. They can still smell each other, but one doesn't intimidate the other by sight. Just what I do, especially with agressive feeders!

I haven't had any issues.

I keep my two male juvenile kings in the same cage (they have been in the same cage since I found the second, and are same size) - and they actually seem to be rather communal, they are almost always both in the same hiding spot, or both crawling about. Since they are both males, I will definitely be separating them soon as I don't want them to battle when they become sexually mature.

Over at Turtle Bay (a science and natural history museum her in Redding) they have three california kings in the same enclosure - and the biggest is certainly big enough to eat the smallest, but they've had them that way for awhile now, I don't think they are attempting to propogate them because they have been kept together too long for that.

Anyway - with the pyro pyro next to the female cal king - if I sneak in there at night, often they are both out of their hiding spots and as close to other as they can get. No way I'll put them together, the Cal King would likely eat the pyro pyro, but the pyro pyro seems interested in the other king. I think these snakes may be more comunal than we give them credit for.

Maybe they are just more comunal when young - safety in numbers.
I don't know.

I was worried about scent but guess no problem you two never had any problems. I intend to block the sight with black sheet of construnction paper between both tanks.

Thanks

My Ruthven over a year old and has no concept of what constricting is. He eats great but constricting is unheard of for him . My rosy a big constrictor after couple of months both eat thawed hoppers.

FunkyRes Jul 18, 2006 09:54 PM

Thanks - I guess mountain kings just may be late in the game as far as constricting.

She still doesnt constrict. I have never seen any of mine constrict. She is about 25-30 inches now.

That's a great shot of a Cal King

Thanks for the info.
I'm going to try and get an '06 male pyro pyro for my female this fall at the herp show up in Washington State (which will actually be my first herp show). Don't know if I'll ever breed them, it may be difficult to provide proper brumation - but if I do get a male, at least it's a possibility. Watching mountain kings pip and emerge from eggs would just be an incredible sight.
