Black Milk Egg Question?

jasonmc Jul 18, 2006 06:57 PM

So I decided to keep my Black Milk eggs in the cage with the mother. I figure the cage is kept at a temp that is around 80 degrees. The eggs have been isolated in a container and the container is pritty stable to avoid tip overs.
My question is? Will florescent lights harm the eggs?
She gave me thirteen eggs, and only one looks to be turning green.

Thanks:
Jason

I would take those eggs out of the cage and put them in an incubator. I think it would be easier to control their environment (temp and humidity) in an incubator and would eliminate the risk of the snake damaging the eggs somehow.

Congrats on the eggs. It looks like a nice clutch. I had a slug in my clutch too.

I'd put them in an incubator. You can make one pretty easily out of a cooler if you don't have one. All you need is a thermostat, some type of heating pad (like an undertank heater) and some bottles of water to keep the temp steady. Or you can do like some people and put them on a high shelf in a closet.

Congrats on the clutch, man! Too bad I've got no more room for herps otherwise I'd buy one o' those little monsters off you? Did you incubate the hoggie eggs?

I think you guys are right. I am gona put them into an incubator tonight. It blows me away just how big these eggs are. It was no wonder the snake was so tired after laying. I gave her a 24 hour window to relax before I took the eggs. It was kind of wild! She was coiled around the eggs like a python, only she had no problem with me removing her from the eggs.
Well gotta go and set up the incubator!

Reako,
I did put the Hog eggs in an incubator. She only gave me three this year. I think she is old and I'm gonna retire her now. I put her in the classifieds as a retired breeder now a pet snake.

Call me tomarrow (Wednesday) if you wanna go to rodent ranch!

Thanks again to all who gave the advice on the black milks!

She was coiled around the eggs?

Dr. Stebbins told me that some people had observed that with colubrids, though extremely rarely. He suspected it was a trait that a few mothers still had in them when the eggs were deposited in a location that wasn't prime for incubation.

Have other people noticed that with their milks?

That being said, a major danger with leaving eggs with mother kings, kings are known to sometimes eat reptile eggs. I assume the same is possible with milks (which are kings as far as I'm concerned).

Could you post some pics of the pair that was responsible for laying the eggs? Thanks
