Found Dead...

coldth1 Jul 18, 2006 07:57 PM

Ok so i just get done cleaning my lizards cage getting him some food and some water all that good stuff. he seemed fine. A little hungry i would imagine was about a week sins i feed him. but there were still crickets running around when i got the new ones. It seemed like he wasn't eating as much because he normaly would have them all gone in days. Then i Find him dead just 10 minutes or so ago! He had like a big Green spot on the stomach it was almost like a burn mark but green ish. I dont have a heat rock inside my cage or even a heating pad under it (the one i had stoped working awhile ago). I dont get this. Any ideas?

I really would like some help because i have had this Leo for some time. It was around 3 year old. I bought it a little older because it was my first and i didn't no if i could haddle a baby. Well sins i had it so long i decided that i could handle a little one so i picked another leo the other day and then this happens kinda scares me. here are some pics of me new baby leo.

This is what i am keeping him in (not the same as my other leo i had 2 different tanks) Does everything look good to you? I am getting another house for the side with no light just so he has a hot side and a cool side.

Whats the best way of making houseing for when he is shedding?

I have no idea why your other leopard died, but I think your new leopard looks great! Your enclosure looks very well thought out. The only thing is that there is a lot of debate over sand being used as a substrate. I personally use sand with my adult leopard gecko, with no problems. I use cage carpet for my babies. I had a leopard die because it bit a napkin and could not let go. So I don't use that. Paper towels could be used, because they are thicker, but I use reptile cage carpet, just cause it works, and it's safe. I currently have 1 adult leopard, and 7 baby leopards.
Hope this info helps, and sorry about your loss.

but that the light has to go. leos are nocturnal and the light could stress them out. second thing is the light seems to big maybe its too hot for the leo. get an under tank heat pad ditch the light and provide plenty of hide spots. the green spot is the gall bladder it is one of the first thigs to go bad after death in reptiles or it could of ruptured before death and that could be the cause.

thanks so LEOs dont need UV light? or any light at all?

coldth1 Jul 18, 2006 10:42 PM

I have read up on them in books but alot of that has gone away in the years lol. I thought they needed a light?

In my experience, they do better with a light to provide a day/night cycle for them, but I'll agree with the previous post that the one you have looks kinda huge. I use a 50 watt full spectrum bulb - any more than that and it gets a bit too toasty in there.

Also, s/he would probably appreciate some sort of hide on the cool end of the tank too - that way during the day, s/he can choose what temperature to be, rather than have a hide and get baked by the light or be cool enough to be comfortable but be exposed choice. I find that my gecko usually sleeps in the cool hide, but every now and then we see her asleep in the warm one under her light.
