Is this normal behavior? Do anybody's balls do the same thing?

Knott Aug 02, 2003 06:50 PM

My ball python would always, now, stay at the hidebox at the basking area. The temperature there is about 90-95 degree. There seems to be nothing wrong with him as he is very alert, active and flicking his tounge at night when he comes out. Incase you are wondering, I also put a hidebox on the cool end for him, too. He used to use the one at cool end but now, have resided at the basking site. I fed him yesterday and he/she ate the fuzzy pretty quickly...so I guess there is nothing wrong with him. Is this a normal behavior, and does anybody have ball that do this. I guess they do really need higher temperature to fair well.

Thanx!

He's digesting his dinner, they need the warmer temps to help them do that. Nothing to worry about

Thanx!!!! I'm so relieved. By the I'm part Wales you know.

My father's family immigrated from Wales to Texas, US of A, so they do have southern accent. But my dad grew up in California. I was pretty healthy child actually...god knows how many time I've stung by bees and wasps, catching them for fun.

I'm from the other end of the country - Scotland. Did you ever live in Wales or is it just your family? I have been on hols there and considered going to uni there too.

My dad family are an Americans of Wales descendant, and they have Texan accent...you know...cowboys'

The basking or the hiding? Or both? Any case, that's what Balls do. Actually, so do almost all snakes.

I mean is it normal that he likes to bask the whole day frequently. I thought that he might be sick because that's what sick snakes do...seek a higher temperature. But since he ate the fuzzy pretty quickly yesterday, I guess he is alright, right?

Jeff Favelle Aug 03, 2003 03:16 PM

I would never use basking behaviours as a sign of sickness!! Ha ha its what reptiles do! And I would never use eating as a sign of being well either! Again, reptiles eat. If they didn't, they wouldn't exist.

Simple thing is, reptiles use temperatures for many many different things. They use warmer temps to digest etc etc and they use cooler temps to conserve energy etc etc. Don't think that they don't know what they are doing, because they do (not consciously, but you get the idea).

Maybe growing baby snake bask frequently because they need energy to grow and digest food. That would make sense, right? Inorder to grow they need to higer metabolism.

Jeff Favelle Aug 03, 2003 03:37 PM

....and the faster they grow, the less likely they will fall prey to anything and everything in Africa.

Now you're thinking like a snake (and that's a good thing)...
