when a tort gets sick

mythreetorts Jul 18, 2006 10:34 PM

hey has anyone ever realixzed that most common ailments to dessert dwellinmg torts seam to be treated the same way, an antibiotic like baytril. my vet put my sulcata on a perscription this spring for a respritory ailment and it worked but she also told me that if it was numonia or an infection it would be tresated the same way.

so is there a place on the web to get baytril and the recommended doses for the weight of the tort and give a treatment yourself? MY vet had to l;ook everything up in order to diagnos and treat my tort so I think I could look it up and do it my self. don't get me wrong I realize a vet is important but if the symptoms were the same as before I think I can handle it.

comments?

I know the bigger breeders out there can't be paying for an x-ray and perscription everytime one of their torts gets a runy nose.

I work in the veterinary field and this situation tends to be common. Baytril is known as the "miracle drug" when it comes to most reptiles, torts especially. Unfortunately baytril is a perscription drug and can not be acquired over the counter. Depending on the realtionship you have with your veterinarian you can ask him/her if they could just write you a perscription without an office visit. As long as you are sure that it is a respiratory or similiar problem. Or ask for a larger prescription. Unfortunately there are veterinarians out there that are too concerned with the business aspect of medicine and wont give you the prescription without seeing your animal, maybe taking some blood, or an x-ray. Not all of these doctors are corrupt, thats not what im implying some are extremely thoro and stick to strict protocol. Not to be bashing on veterinarians, i dont want it to seem that way, because hopefully will be starting vet school. But just from my 7 years experience with many different doctors i have seen the best and worste of situations. Hope this helps, sorry to ramble a bit, but its reality.
