Calico Black Rat?

Dewey Jul 18, 2006 10:39 PM

Just curious what others think of this snake. The white scales you see are NOT scars of any sort. They are just white scales. I will try for more and better pics later, but this is what I have for now. He is a rusty phase black rat. Mike Jolliff, what's your take on him? After all, you're the one that produced him.

Is one of his parents a leucistic? I have a rusty that was parented by a leucistic x whiteside and he has the same type of white splotches on him as well.

Sure is worthy of a dinking project.Good luck with it.Nice snake.By the way,are all rustys het.leucy? How does that work.Would leucy.to normal produce rustys?

Not all rusties are het. leucy, but many leucys are in reality rusty. Rusty is co-dominant, which means that those leucistic black rats bred to a normal black rat would produce half normal, half rusty babies. So, I guess yes, MANY rusties are het leucy, but not all. The only ones I've ever seen in person, I know for a fact aren't, and have never been bred with anything except direct descendants of wild-caught rusty black rats.

Seems like a lot of people bred their rusty black rats with leucistic rats, which may be how the rumors started that rustys aren't pure black rats(as many leucs are crosses between black & Texas rats).

readin' your post. Was that the screamer Rusty you got off of me?? I expected him to be a brighter adult. I have an animal I call "calico" but she has light pink spattered throughtout - not white. I've seen a (WC?) Black Rat that was being sold as a "Piebald" @ Hamburg yrs. back that resembles the white seen on your animal but it was black - not a rusty. Who knows, maybe something else weird has popped up?? Keep us up to date on any further color changes..... vccc
