Disassembling Vision Cages for parts

Melisssss Jul 19, 2006 07:41 AM

Has anyone ever taken the glass track off a Vision cage and reused it on a cage they were building? My husband says I should sell the cages but they have been altered for RHP and have one fairly large hole drilled in to fit plugs thru so I am not sure people would have an interest in buying them. I could make use of the track and glass though and then scrap the cage. I really hate those cages. Why you would not put a flat bottom and top on them I will never understand. They are hard to clean and leave too many gaps for snakes to tunnel under the RHP.

Should I? Shouldn't I?

Wow. What a difference in experience. I really like the Visions (mostly #400s') I find them easy to clean. (I plan to silicone the little gap under the bottom track)I never get crud that sticks like you occasionally could on Neodeshas and after years of wooden cages and glass aquariums these seem to me like the greatest thing since sliced bread. Light weight, rugged and simple. If you just drilled a little hole to fit the cord through and put a new plug on I would think all you'd have to do is silicone the hole. and good as new. For a modest price it's sold.If you made a bigger hole maybe you could find a platic patch of some kind and aquarium silicone it? I'm just guessing, but I think the tracks are riveted and you might bend them badly trying to remove them? Good luck. Bob

PS. Just curious, since you don't like the visions what kind of commercial cage do you like better? The Boaphiles look easy to clean too and the drop down door has an appeal with simplicity (although potential scratched up plastic veiwing plate threw me off)Most of the other commercial cages look to me to be some sort of derivative of Vision or Boaphile (not to insult anyone) Thanks again, just curious.

The only other cage I have bought has been one from Cagecrafters. I love the cage but don't like the door setup because it's a crevice and I have a snake that loves to rub between the door and the cage. It is extremely easy to clean and heat.

I want all my cages to match and let's face it, I don't have 2-3k to spend on cages. I have decided to build my cages to my liking and they will match. My reptiles are all kept in my bedroom so These are things I see everyday. Yes, they are heavy but worth it to me.

Cool Melisss, Just curious. It's important to me too that the cages all match and look organized/nice with seeing them every day during chores. Mine are in the cellar where I am always doing laundry etc. Good luck with everything. Bob

LOL good then you know how bothersome it can be. Most people don't get it when I say I NEED things to match. I am so glad I found one who gets it.

ABSOLUTELY Meliiss! LOL

I think one of the best attributes of Vision cages is their resale value. I would sell the cages as is.

I don't have any commerical cages and have no plans to get any. But if I did Visions are the only current product on the market I would consider. I love that one display cage they carry. I don't recall the product # but its the cage that is 48" x 30" x 30" or thereabouts.

I think it's 48"x28"x28". I thought long on that one. I saw an old one with the 3 vents for small strip lites at a show in person and was impressed with how big it seemed when standing next to it,rather than a monitor. The new version has the light shroud like the #400s' that shade the light from your eyes and allows for a clamp light on part of it if you like. The downside is that I think it probably takes something away from the feeling of height in the cage. I like that I can steam clean the Visions too without fear of discoloring them (got a nice steamer a little while back) and I use the Chlorhexidine. It cetainly lacks the appeal of nice "natural" cages but neat, clean and orderly float my boat too. That bigger Vision is tugging at me though for a nice natural display or just for a terrarium with Orchids or Ferns. How about a pic of those all BLACK snakes you are working on sometime?

Bob,

I have not seen the new version of that cage. I do like how durable the Visions are. No concerns with dragging one up a flight of stairs, throwing it in the back of a truck and blasting it with a pressure sprayer down at the local DIY car wash. I would not do that with any other commerical cage. Even the old monster Neodesha I had (30" x 30" x 36" - IIRC) seemed a bit fragile for that kind of abuse, although it was a nice cage.

Here is a picture of an adult G. janseni. The all-black Seleyar form. Mine are not quite adults and not yet glossy black.

Very neat snakes.
