baby blotchie not eating well...

lele Jul 19, 2006 02:22 PM

he seems OK, but I have to go out and collect little green caterpillars for him. I ordered phoenix worms since he will only eat things that wiggle and steers clear of anything with legs(!) but he won't eat them either. I moved him to a 10 gal tank, more temp gradient, lots of safe places to go, upped his basking temp, spritz rocks a couple times of day if he wants to drink (they never seem to - even mom and dad). I am waiting for some silkies to hatch, but other than that at a loss. Have offered several bugs collected from outside. He has pooped twice (that I have seen), but I do not have the time to collect everyday. I am going away next week and was going to sneak him and a light into the hotel but not sure what to do about food.

I'm not sure what to do either. Have you tried the wingless fruit flies yet or doing sweeps of the grass with a fine net? Sweeping usually yeilds a broad range of tiny insects, some of which would hopefully be tempting. Is there any possibility he's eating when you're not watching? Does his health seem to be deteriorating?

I didn't have much luck getting field plankton. I think he ate a small tree cricket, or it got out. I monitor his feeding and he just ignore the phoenix worms and runs from baby roaches! His health seems OK so maybe he is getting enough. I haven't tried babyfood-type concoction yet - is there a good mix that he will eat?

I've never tried baby food with lizards like this. With some of my finicky eaters, I've found that crickets with both hoppers and the antennae removed are often very appealing. This would be a delicate operation on one week old crix and then there is the difficulty with quantities. Have you tried handy capping the roaches (I'm not sure if removing a few legs and the antennae is even feasable with them). Do you have any small spiders around the outside of your house? When I have baby alligator lizards, they are always a favorite.

I vacuum around spiders and through earwigs and things in their webs to feed them! lol!! I live in a very old house (275 years) with a 3 story barn - spiders abound! An as fate would have it I found a tiny little black baby spider in Darwin's tank and thought "where their is one baby spider there must be at least 50 more! It did not take long to gather about 7 or 8 and offered them to - wait, he didn't even give me TIME to offer them! Hanging from heir silk on their way into the tank and Jr. jumped and nabbed each one! I then wandered the gardens, doorways, etc. I found two newly hatched eggs sacs. They are too small today but made a mental note of their whereabouts and will wait until they begin to disperse. One mama spider had 4 sacs so I may bring one in to hatch out myself. I found a small black jumping spider and watched carefully (they can/do bite) and the little guy even seemed wary so I took it out and put back outside. So spiders it is - for now at least. He will not touch those damn Phoenix worms. Thinking of dying them green as I am sure he will eat them! jk

thanks!

My newest hatchling baja collared kids are not going for my baby roaches either, actually one slightly older hatchling is eating them but the newest hatclings (2 1/2 week olds are not.

I find the newbown roaches seems to play dead alot. They turn on their backs and do not move and then turn over and run and hide never to be found by the lil hatchlings. I am however using tiny B dubia roaches (do climbing or flying.)

I have had to order 1000 1/4 inch crickets for my very young kids. These type lizards (even the blotchies) love the quick movement. But as I say the baby roaches are being eaten by all my older kids and some baby agamas a few months old are enjoying them.

I hope your guy starts to eat better for you . I would go with the fast little crix though.
