sleeping Uro?

tnj318 Aug 02, 2003 07:27 PM

I just bought an ornate uro about 2 months ago. I have noticed when he's running around he will just pass out and fall asleep wherever he's at. He does it all day long. He's real active and runs around but he will just fall asleep. I just wondered if this was normal. Maybe because he is so young I didn't know just wanted a more experienced opinion

He literally RUNS around? that could be a sign of stress, plus he would be exausted from beign stressed out i would think. But i would wait to see others opinions.
Good luck

I agree that more info is needed! How busy is the area you have him in? What other animals do you have? What size tank, are you housing him with other uros? Is he eating well? Ect.... Mine does alot of motering around and then plops down whereever for a snooze. One of his favorite late afternoon spots is on top of his half log on the cool side of the tank. Right after a good glass dance! LOL

Mine isn't really running so much as just like you said motors around the cage. He jumps up and down on the side of the glass most of the day. He currently lives in a 10 gallon (We're in the process of getting him a 55). He is alone in his cage. I have other reptiles in the house but not with him. He's on play sand substrate right now, but I think we are going to change him over to bird seed soon. His heat stays fine and he seems healthy, but he does just fall asleep standing up, or eating. He just passes out. Most the time he's jumping up on the glass and just falls asleep standing up on the glass. Does this sound like your guy.

Ok, yes this sounds exactly like my Uro Drake. These things are all normal. My main concern is the size of your tank right now. I don't know how big your Uro is but here are a few things to think about as far as the size of his cage. Rule # 1 bigger is always better! (unless they are hatchlings) and a 50 gallon tank sounds great. There is a formula to figuring out just how big your tank should be I think it is 4x the length of you uro, and 2x the width of your uro. If I am wrong and this is incorrect (I can't remember where I saw this) someone please jump in here and correct me!

I am glad that you asked this question because I was having the same concerns with my new ornate. He has taken several naps today and I was begining to wonder if that was normal. Today is his first day home so hopefully he (or she) will feel comfretable at home soon. He has alreay ate some dandilion greens and a couple crickets and he had a bowl movement. I am so excited and intrigued by him, it is taking all ny willpower just to not pick him up and hold him every five minutes. I want to give him plenty of time to settle in before I begin handling him. Thanks again.
