Tri-color ???questions

jyohe Jul 19, 2006 07:06 PM

ok........people around here have trouble getting good eggs all the time, or any good eggs at all from these tri-hogs.....
they brunamte low temps one year ,higher another....no brumation at all ,and still have troubles......I think the reasons are sperm death or low sperm rate and taking too long for the males to produce good viable sperm in any given year.....sometimes they get all duds then a couple good eggs in the second or third clutches........

so

how long? what temps to brumate?.........and what temps do you think is good for basic summer months?....

Thanxx.......

I know it can be easy or hard to get eggs.....pueblan milks bred for me for years till I brumated them once......then I got 0 good eggs for a couple years after that (sold them out)....happened to at least 3 people I know with campbelli......

(heck.this year I can't get corns to breed.......but I guess summer temps in winter will mess a whole year up..........at least it makes less babies to feed....

Thanxx again

Who is having trouble? I cool mine down sometimes and sometimes I don’t and they always produce good eggs. Maybe its just one of your snakes has a problem or maybe they didn’t breed and the female will still lay eggs but they just wont be fertile. Tell us more and maybe we can be of more help to you.

as said.......they cooled them to the 50's and got mostly duds.....the next year they only cooled them to low 70's I think.....and still got duds......at times the second clutch will be half good and half dud and the first and third clutch will be duds.........they got tired of this and sold them to my friend....who just sold them to me so he could get a Harley 1200 sportster..........

he got the bike..I got the tri-hohs.......male is 6 and female is 4........I also have a year old girl growing pretty good.......and am getting a couple more this year......

they are kept at 80 to 84 here usually....but I just got them......

they are on cypress........moist...

they eat mice fuzzies.....

........as asked.......

what temps are good all year and for brumation?......

it seems you don't have to worry either way and get good eggs......

Well, with mine...the first clutch the female laid ended up being infertile unfortunately. However, she laid another clutch a month later and so far (knock on wood) they seem to being doing well and look fertile. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. With one of my pairs, I need not do anything at all, just simply place them together and the male is all over the female.

Normally I will give them a slight brumation during the winter time. But I've heard of several people not brumating them at all and having clutch after clutch of them.

Who knows why the infertile eggs? You may be right in the fact that the male could produce sperm that is not viable...but there are several other factors that could contribute to either not producing eggs or producing only infertile eggs. Hopefully whatever the problem may be for any breeder, that they will get it resolved so that more tri colors will be hatched out. I never get tired of seeing those little guys hatching.

Sounds like your temps are a bit high. I keep mine at 78, and I have eggs galore.
