Tuna in water or oil...

xblackheart Jul 19, 2006 09:37 PM

Okay. Its feeding day, yet again. I am trying to get many of my hatchlings to eat. Last feeding I tried brained. This is my last try before live. My question is....do I use the juice from tuna that is in water or oil? Does antone use a specific brand? Any help would be great. Also, do you leave the pinkie in all night? I tried the tuna trick twice before and left it over night. Not only did it not work, but it reaked the next morning.

I have heard of using tuna in water no specific brand though.. i never used tuna myself though..

Why don't you give a live pinky a try?

I have no live pinkies (I stopped raising my own feeders when I got too many snakes, switched to rodent pro). I would have to buy them and at this point, I have about 25 hatchlings that are going on week 5 that are not eating regularly, if at all. About 20 that have not taken any meal on their own at all. I don't know the cost of pinkies in other areas, but around here, they are $1 each. I know $25 does not seem like much, but I already spend $100 a month of frozen food (I order $300 worth every 2 and a half to 3 months). If you take $25 per feeding, twice a week, thats like $200 for a month to feed only 25 snakes. If at all possible, I'd rather get them on f/t. Of course, if it came down to them dying, I would definitely do live. Otherwise I would not deserve to own snakes. That is why if this does not work, I will try live. I just wanted to exhaust all my options first.
Thanks for the feed back!

Tuna water, generic brand is fine, and if they don't eat it in the dark relatively quickly...they probably won't, even if you left them with it overnight.

Good luck!

yeah, I have noticed those who do not eat within a few hours, still have not eaten in the morning.
Thanks for the help.
I have about 20 snakes in bags with tuna water dipped pinkies and another 15 snakes with just pinkies in a bag (my second clutch's first feeding) right now. Because it took so long to feed everyone, they will stay overnight. But, I probably wont keep them over night after this. Especially if I have to keep using tuna scented pinkies. Man, those stink the next morning!!

That's a large enough number of hatchlings to be statistically significant, since they're all non-feeders thus far (the older babies, I mean). So, be sure to let us know how it worked for you when the final numbers are in. I'd really be interested in seeing you fared!

6 out of 6 Kings eat every meal given....

Corns

4 out of 14 (second clutch) ate first meal offered yesterday normal f/t, two days after most had shed

21 snakes from first clutches (2 different snakes)

4 eating regularly

3 have taken 2 meals

2 have taken 1 meal (1 took a tuna scented one last night)

Only one snake out of 17 ate a scented pinkie last night. Looks like I will be going to live next!

I know live is more expensive & a real pain in the ass when everything else is eating FT.. But, in my experiance you will only need to feed one or 2 live & they will switch over to frozen... i would try the tuna thing & if that fails then give live a try... if they do take live then try frozen for the second meal... if they still don't take try scenting the thawed pink with a live pink.. that will help...

I've had the same experiences as Mike. Sometimes they need 2 or 3 live pinkies to get "jump started" and then they'll start taking frozen. My feeding methods are trying twice with frozen/thawed - one after the post-hatch shed and again 5 days later. If they don't eat, I then go the live pinky route.

I thought about saving it for the next feeding, but figured it'd go bad, so gave it to the dog.

I think every one in my house hates fish, so no tuna surprise for us! lol
