UVB or Vitamin D3

hausmaster Jul 20, 2006 02:56 PM

I know nobody knows the answer for sure but some input would be great. Does anyone have experience on raising dragons without UVB and instead giving them the D3 through supplements?

I've heard that the supplements are not digested in a way that provides the same benifits of UVB light?

Can some people who have substituted the UVB with supplements give me some feedback on any problems they had ?

I have never tried to raise beardies with no UVB and to the best of my knowledge, there is no documentation on how much D3 from supplements is necessary for the health of a beardie. Supplements of D3 can build up in the beardie's system and cause an overdose while D3 produced from exposure to UVB or sunlight is regulated by the dragon's system and won't cause an overdose. Since D3 produced from exposure to the sun or UVB won't cause an overdose, it makes little sense to me to use a D3 supplement that can cause a problem. Its just not worth the risk or the trouble it would take to figure out the "dosage".

Just my 2 cents worth.

took a little more effort but installed a uvb light into my coffee table cage .

Thanks for the advice here and on the chameleon forums.

Coffee table cage?? I've heard of some people having such a thing for other animals, but never a beardie!

You're welcome for the advice. Hope it helped!
