no pets left behind

beardiedragon Jul 20, 2006 06:58 PM

hope this is ok to post here. I hope the urgancy of this matter will be considdered.
While the only support I give to PETA (not People for the Eating of Tasty Animals) is in cases like this, they do have a valid point. My point is I understand the limited space in evacuating people from an area and that people come before animals. All I ask is if there is any way to bring pets along that it not be ruled out. Don’t give the order “no pets” but rather people before pets.

This is the message from PETA
You can take action today to help Americans fleeing Lebanon to take their companion animals with them.

Images of kittens sniffing amid rubble. Dogs seen running frantically down the streets. Distraught Americans and others told by our own military that they must leave their animal companions behind to starve to death in the destruction. These scenes—reminiscent of the cruel and illegal decisions made following Hurricane Katrina—are a reality once again.

Although the French government has made provisions for animal evacuations, the United States is doing just the opposite. U.S. officials evacuating citizens from Lebanon have failed to heed lessons learned in the wake of Hurricane Katrina and are refusing U.S. citizens' attempts to evacuate with their animal companions.

PETA has sent an urgent letter to Brig. Gen. Carl Jensen—the military commander in charge of U.S. evacuation operations in Lebanon—begging him to instruct his officers to assist evacuees in taking their animals with them to safety.

Please immediately urge Gen. Jensen not to break U.S. law by encouraging abandonment of companion animals. Ask him to ensure the safety of all Americans in Lebanon by ordering that U.S. citizens be helped to evacuate with their animal companions:

Commander, Task Force 59

This is a bit off topic with what your post was directly referring to but i just had to comment on the whole no pet left behind law. I live in Houston which is obviously a hurricane area and the law for us is that if you need to be evacuated your pet is coming but not with you. That freaks me out. Is someone at a shelter going to do fresh crickets and veggies for my beardies...or the right temps??? I know they can survive but its just a terrifying thought. Also, not saying I do but some of us may keep venomous...what are they supposed to do in that situation? Its just so scary...i lost a pet on the god-forsaken Rita evacuation(i ws on the road for 19 hours, better than my boyfriends 37 but still) Sorry so long but its a terrifying thought for me.

sorry to say but if im evacuation anywhere, and its in my own vehicle, my pets are coming with me. no one is going to stop me from bringing my pets or personal belongings if im evacuating myself.

Oh i fully agree but out here(i don't know what Florida is) if your in the middle of evacuating and your car breaks down they take you to an emergency shelter and your pets to an animal shelter. Thats why i am saying I am afraid to leave because what if my car broke down and like i said some of the animals some may possess may not be as welcome.

yea im from virginia beach virginia, so hurricanes are prone to our area. luckily we havent been hit with anything since hurricane isabel a few years ago. not nearly as bad of course as rita or katrina or anything that hit the gulf last year.

but yea in an emergency evacuation where im going to shelters, i dont know what id do. i have a cat which is easy to take care of but i also have my bearded colony, 2 sugar gliders, and a chameleon. id be afraid of letting someone else take them in an emergency evacuation situation.

hopefully nothing like that happeneds so i dont have to deal with it....and i hope nothing like that ever happeneds to anyone else out there
