Female to young to get buzzy??? winkwink

crestygecko Jul 20, 2006 07:02 PM

hey all,

I have an adult male D. Azureus and I recently bought a sub adult female for him. The last couple of nights I have been hearing a buzzerd sound.....Buzz.....buzz.......Buzz...sound that I could not find until I looked into my Azureus and saw my male perched on a pothos leaf calling to the female. They are around the same size but she is younger than him by about 4 months or so. Will he continue to call and call and will their be any mating, eventhough she is not an adult???? If so should I set up a deposition site??? He seems to really like this pothos plant and I saw her get close to him but I didn't see no funky stuff. What should I be doing to fascilitate them and is she way to young to breed??? Thanks all

He recognizes her as a female, and that's all he needs. You don't need any special deposition site if you have pothos in there. When she is ready, she will lay eggs on the sturdier leaves in the vivarium. You should wait three or so days and remove those eggs that appear fertile to try your skills at tad raising.

hi patty,

Thanks for all the help, you are always their for everyone My question is.....Does it not matter that she is a sub adult an not a full adult??? She can still lay eggs at a sub adult age???? I keep hearing his calling in the night but I always thought they need to be adults to mate. Was I horribly wrong???? If I was and they do mate and their is eggs, what is the best site or advice that I can get to rearing tadpoles. How do I do it and where can I find the info or what will I neeed??? I know its alot of question so if you've answered them before in detail maybe I can look for them on this site. Thanks!!!!!!

He may be calling, but until she is old enough and ready, there won't be any breeding going on. She will respond to him and lay eggs when she is old enough and ready to do so, and not before. In the meantime, he can croak or buzz his heart out without getting anywhere.

I have no successful experiences with raising eggs and tads myself, mostly because I'm not a breeder and don't try, except to watch my thumbs raise their own, and once helped them out a bit when they deserted a tad in a brome cup to go on breeding instead of parenting, and I fed it myself, mostly by stealing eggs from them and adding a little fish flake occasionally. You can go to some other forums that discuss the breeding and raising questions ad infinitum, such as Frognet.org, and Dendrobard.com. There are perhaps more serious breeders and gurus there, but they aren't always as beginner friendly, so there's room for all of us. But don't desert us here, please. Read everything you can, and weight it. Also don't froget the care sheets offered by breeders such as Saurian and Black Jungle.
