Sulcata Lifespan

SanClementeSnake Jul 20, 2006 10:56 PM

I was wondering what the average lifespan of sulcatas is? I can't really seem to find it anywhere.

Thanks,
Justin

You haven't been able to find it anywhere because there isn't an average. Up until reptile husbandry practices started getting better, they didn't live long at all. They used to be wild caught, and would succumb to any number of diseases. Since things have improved, there have been some flukes (some that died prematurely for oddball reasons, and some that just weren't kept right regardless of what information is now being provided), but for the most part the tortoises of known age (so ones that were aquired as hatchlings or young adults) have not passed on yet.

It is generally accepted that many tortoise species can reach or exceed 100 years of age if well cared for.
