whats the best starter

I was wondering what newt or salamander would be the best to start out with. Where could I get a care sheet?

I would recommend probably a firebellied newt as a starter for a newt, or maybe a tiger salamander.

Here's a link to an excellent site all about SALAMANDES/NEWTS!

I don't know about other salamanders, but for newts I'd recommend

1) Cynops pyrrhogaster (Japanese Firebellied Newt) - make sure that what you get is not Cynops orientalis, the Oriental or Chinese Firebellied newt, they are much more temperature sensitive and not as easy to keep.

2) Pachytriton labiatus (Paddletail newt) - only keep a single one because they are territorial.

Chances are you can't find japanese firebelly's. Most stores here in america only sell chinese from what I've seen. At least on the west coast.

I have had good luck with chinese though, just make sure to get healthy ones from the store. (check for infections, etc)

I picked up 2 japanese from a pet store, but that was back in '97. Havn't seen any since. Saw a few paddletails here and there.

I also aree with the tiger salamander as a good starter. They are very hearty!
