Green Anoles were my first... never had a problem with them. Not sure how many would be recomended in a 20gal tank. A pair, male and female, should do quite fine. Eats mealworms, crickets, spiders, and other small bugs. Just needs misting twice a day so that they can drink. They don't get big either... like 8" at the most i think. However they are difficult to tame so that you could take them out of the tank. Never managed to get mine to not run away if i took them out.

well it all depends if it is a 20 gallon long or tall.

if it is tall here are some lizards:
golden gecko
white lined(or skunk)gecko
green or brown anoles
the small species of day geckos
crocodile gecko
tokay gecko
bibrons gecko
blue tailed tree lizards

if it is long here are some lizards:
jewelled and haitian curly tailed lizards
armadillo lizards
leopard geckos
pictus geckos
long tailed grass lizards
sandfish
broad headed skink
great plains skink
red sided skink

hope this list helps

yes green anoles should do just fine they are not so much as handling pets and can be pretty fun to watch sometimes. NEVER stick 2 males together no matter what. they will fight to the death. One male and one female should do okay be sure to provide a lot of hiding places for them. Usually the rule is 1 green anole for a 10 gallon aquarium in this case 2 should be fine for a 20 gallon aquarium you should not have any problems trying to find any information about them cause they are a pretty popular pet for beginners. Have fun with them and make sure you have a screen lid it is very important so they dont get out and run around your house.

i wouldnt recommend anoles. although they were my first herps i found fast they were anything but easy to care for. i got a "male and female" which turned out to be two males. i got a 10 gallon tank, bark, and one heat lamp which by accident was a night one so i had to go buy another lamp. so everyday i had to change the bulb. they can be expensive with lighting and habitat design. also, they eat A LOT of crix. that was 4 years ago since i got them and i still have one of the original two. the other one died just about a month ago. mine were actually friendly and liked to be held but i still didnt. since i got them as adults i figure they were abou 5-6 years old... and i am going to breed one of them. i dont think you should get anoles untill you are a little more experienced.
i think you should get a leopard gecko. they can be colorful, like to be held, are relatively inexpensive, can be fed mealies, can use heat pads without the expense of fluorescent lamps. the list goes on. please think about it.
i cant remember if you said you wanted a lizard or a herp in general but if u dont want a leo, why dont you try a garter or ribbon snake, or how about a pac man frog, whites tree frog, a few green tree frogs, or an african clawed frog? whatever you choose, good luck
