What wattage bulbs?

ibill Jul 21, 2006 04:55 PM

I'm acquiring two stars and have an enclosure that is 14in high. I bought a reptisun 10 for the UVB but am unsure what wattage of either zoomeds day and night heat bulbs or basking bulbs should be used. The enclosure is 4ft. by 2ft. and the lights will be on one side. they are just babies, 6months. Bulbs come in 25,40,60,100 etc. How does one determine the wattage needed? Thanks for any advice, Bill

I have two 8 months old leopard tortoises and very similar setup. Basically, I tried different bulbs before I got the temperature right. Here's what I'm using with timers:

Summer:
Reptisun 10.0 + 50 watt bulb during the day
50 watt red lightbulb at night (or 60 watt ceramic)
Room temperature is around 75F

Winter:
Reptisun 10.0 + 75 watt bulb during the day
150 watt ceramic all the time
Room temerature is around 65F

These are just suggestions. I do turn them on and off manually when the weather gets crazy. It's better to leave the light on, and let them choose if they want to be under, near, or away from it. And yes, I have the bulbs on one side of the enclosure. The UVB is across the whole enclosure.
