Heating rubbermaid for hatchling

blup Jul 21, 2006 11:48 PM

hi you guys....so i got a reptile heater from zoo med, the smallest size and i m going to house my corn snake hatchling in a 6 qt rubbermaid container. the heater says not to put it on plastic, except critter keepers. is it okay to use the heater on the rubbermaid container?? and what temperature is acceptable for a heat area? what would burn a baby snake??

personally i would wrap the heater in aluminum foil and then in a washcloth and put under the plastic. that way its not 100% on the plastic to make it melt. aluminum foil cuts the temp down a lil and just in case the aluminum gets hot the washcloth is there. but i'll probably get in trouble for telling you that by someone. but thats just my 2 cents

someone that I know uses under tank heaters, and plastic sterilite containers. He sticks the heat pad to the shelf that the container sits on. Also, only the back part of the container is on the pad, that way the snake can go to the front if it is hot. You could also buy a thermostat that the heat pad plugs into, that way when it gets too hot, it will shut off. If you set it up this way, I suggest setting it up first and seeing if it works before putting the snake in it. Good luck
