Alligator Lizard Eggs

aliceinwl Aug 02, 2003 09:51 PM

Here's the 15 eggs laid by "Mama". They've almost doubled in size since they were laid. They are pictured in a Rubber-made 1.5 pt Servin' Saver 2/3rds full of moist vermiculite. The penny was placed in there for perspective. I'll post pictures of the hatchlings when the time comes.

What sub-species?

They are Californias

I believe by law you cannot release your new hatchlings in the wild w/o CA Game & Wildlife Dept permission. Hopefully either you're starting a breeding program, and/or planning to sell them.

I'm in a bit of a bind as far as dealing with the babies. Mom was found injured and gravid in my backyard (she had a thorn embedded in her jaw which prevented her from eating). She laid the eggs while she was recouperating.

Because I live in California and don't have a breeding permit I can't keep, ship or sell the babies.

Since both parents are from my backyard and the babies will not have had contact with any other "exotic" lizard, they won't be carrying any foreign genes or diseases. So unless I run into local qualified keepers (rather unlikely) I'll release them.

Heck, rather than the little ones risking themselves as birdfood, catfood, snakefood, or roadkill, give em to me That's legal, right!! I'll pay the burden of your efforts, which is not the same as buying it. I just want to take care and raise the little dragons. I'd love to breed and propagate them too.

I dont believe it is legal for you to set them free regardless of how close they may have or may not have come to another lizards please check California laws first. Also I could verry well be wrong but I have lived in California all my life and have never heard of a breeding licence needed. I do know you can sell them for science or educational use.
