Get CRUSHED as a welterweight. He doesn't have the same punch he did as a lightweight. Mayweather or Margarito would literally put him in the hospital. He needs to hang up the gloves.
Joe
I totally agree, but he is a big power in boxing.
After I whent to a UFC fight it kill Boxing for me in a big way.

UFC will ever really be mainstream. It will be very very popular but do not think it will be as accepted or popular as boxing. Kinda sux b/c people who enjoy boxing should watch Chuck Lidell foght.
Joe
Disagree.....UFC is the wave of the future and it's just getting there. Boxing is soooo boring compared to UFC, ask anyone 40 or so and younger. People are tired of the boxing fiascos.....I know I am. Why would I pay $40 to watch 2 skinny guys slap each other with gloves or 2 fat guys hug each other for 15 rounds when you can watch UFC? Mixed martial arts has yet to see it's peak and it will be sometime but it will be bigger than boxing.....JMO
you are. I agree that UFC is FAR superior to boxing in terms of entertainment value, but I'm not sure that the majority of America has the stomach to handle it. When I first started watching it, I found myself grimacing and reacting without even knowing it whereas with boxing, I've never once given an unconscious cue that I was seeing something that bothered me. Now, with the more UFC I've watched I rarely do that anymore except with a few of the submission holds (like when Frank Mir broke Tim Sylvia's arm - yeeeooowww!!!!).
I definitely think that UFC will only gain in popularity as it becomes more visible and they get more charismatic participants. I know I started watching it because a friend of mine was a participant on the Ultimate Fighter season 3 reality show and he's funny as H3LL! It was a shame they didn't focus on him and his humor as much, but I guess they wanted to make the guys w/ the bad@$$ attitudes shine because that's what sells. :-/
One thing I like about the UFC is that there are so few REALLY well rounded fighters and so the tide of the match can really turn VERY fast depending on where the fight is taking place and the match can end at ANY time. With boxing, it's gotten boring to me because so many of the bouts go the distance because those guys have just conditioned themselves to take 12-15 rounds of punishment and still look fresh. I also like the fact that UFC fighters just wear the little 4oz gloves. It makes defending an onslaught SO much more difficult and it takes a LOT more skill to defend, and to land strikes.
Anyway, I'll shut up now. As I was saying, I HOPE UFC becomes more popular than boxing, I just don't know that it'll EVER happen. In the meantime, I'll be happy with the gains it's making

I follow both sports and look at it sort of as Morphs verses Locality. Morph guys are attracted to the flash and hype while the locality guys appreciate the pure beauty and natural history. I like both for different reasons. Just like ...........................
The guys that say boxing is boring don't really appreciate the skill and technique involved they just want flash. If the fighters aren't flailing away it's dull. To these guys the looping arm punch's and clumsy take downs found in the UFC represent excitement, watching two sweaty guys laying on the ground with their legs wrapped around each other. Today's hybrid UFC fighters are really jacks of all trades and masters of none. It's their short comings as much as their strengths that make them exciting. While I do find some of the fights entertaining and the guys are tough they do come off very sloppy, but this is the very aspect that most UFC fight fans enjoy. Bar fight appeal.
As far as popularity go's I can see the UFC being more popular then boxing in a general way for the same reasons P Diddy sells more records then Coltrane. The one thing I don't see yet is a true sports icon immerging from the UFC like ALI, Tyson, Sugar Ray, Roy Jones etc. Even Lennox Lewis is more of a household name world wide then anyone past or present the UFC has produced.
It's interesting that for a sport on the rise the UFC is already resorting to head lining their biggest events with bogus fiascos such as Gracie / Hughes ,Shamrock / Ortiz ,Couture / Liddell is the sport that thin that they have to relie on washed up retreads for their main events? Gracie hadn't fought in TEN YEARS and he steps in and gets a title shot are you kidding ! And Ken Shamrock wow I never thought I'd see a sadder spectacle then Tyson post Don King but Shamrock takes the cake and he's the UFC's most recognizable name. What next a Kimo / Sylvia maybe Don Fry match up ? Ernie Eison
I like your take on the topic....Great post. Very good points!
exciting to see how the sport develops

I totally agree. I like Locales a bit more than Morphs my self.
But you do have a point on your post. But I still think it will one day be just as popular if not more than boxing. Boxing has taking a beating with the lack of a quality heavy weight for a looooong time. So with that said lets see where it all goes.
Thank you,

To watching the NFL versus the Arena league. Boxing is the established sport with a dedicated and loyal background where as the UFC is the "fringe" sport. I think that boxers are much more discaplined and have a more fundamental background versus the UFC where is is "balls to the wall" for 3 rounds. Kinda like watching the Jacksonville Jaguars beating the Tennesse Titans 14-10 where as the Arena league you will watch the Ga Force beat the Orl Predators 65-62.
