eggbound cham - help asap

Oopy Jul 23, 2006 01:08 PM

We have a veiled chameleon who is becoming eggbound. This is her 3rd clutch. Her first were laid without a problem, the 2nd time she had to be induced by the vet (calcium and oxytocin shots) to lay the eggs. It was very stressful for her, and we've read the inducing can take a few years off their life so don't wish to do it again. But at this point we're not left with many other options. Do you know of anything else we can try to help encourage her lay the eggs? warm baths, specific temps, etc...

This time she just doesn't want to lay them, and it almost seems like she is deliberately holding onto the eggs. She has dropped seven eggs in the past 2 weeks in her tank with her waste, and it looks like they were done by accident (not on purpose). She is also getting a black beard, which may be a sign that the eggs are now poisoning her (this has never happened before with her).

There is a good egg-laying site connected to the front of the tank for her to access whenever she wants (playsand, deep & wide enuf to dig in and moist enough to clump but not too wet). We leave the house all day so it is quiet and private, and have put cloths over the top of the tank for more privacy. She gets calcium-fortified crickets, melee worms & calcium-rich pink worms (can't remember their name) daily and we spray the tank 2x a day and hand-feed her water droplets so she isn't dehydrated.

We really don't want to lose her, and are at the end of our options. If anyone has ideas or experience in this area that might help, please post ASAP.

I've also posted this in the cham health forum in hopes of getting a quick response.

Thank you, Oopy

Have you tried the trash can method? It just worked for me about 3 weeks ago and i will always use this method from now on. I filled a trash can with about 16-18 inches of soil and then planted a strong plant in the can for her to rest/bask on. Set up a basking branch and put the UVB strip on top of the can along with the basking blub. Then alls you have to do is wait.

I hope this works for you and your chameleon. Good luck.

I have never used this method, but many keepers use it all the time wit great results. Here's is an article to guide you - truly hope she will be OK!! Please keep us posted.

Have you made other changes from her last clutch that she may be uncomfortable with? Are these fertile? Is she showing any other unusual symptoms?

I've heard about the trash can method and how it can work. We use a diaper pail (ironic, but it has worked in the past), fill it with moist playsand and connect it to the front of the tank with branches going back and forth so Chamice can use it when she's ready.

We're thinking the change is our two bearded dragons. They're in the same room but can't be seen by the chameleon. She could still be smelling them, which might make her think the site isn't safe. After this batch (hopefully she'll make it), we'll be moving her setup into a different area of the house.
