I was just telling Scott the other day about a shorthead garter I had that gave birth. She gave birth to 5... 1 was still born, 1 died shortly after.

But this morning, another one gave birth. I was just getting all the babies out of the enclosure and putting them in water when I realized how freakin many there were. She gave birth to 12 babies. I don't know how many of you have ever kept shorthead garters, but they never have this many. I don't think I ever had one give birth to more than 7 or 8.

All those babies would explain her huge size while she was gravid... In this pic here she is next to an adult eastern garter...

Congrats on your female laying the huge brood. Have you seen anymore of the hypo shortheads, like the one you had found a few years ago?

We found a total of 2 hypos... Both adults, in the same area a month apart from each other.

I haven't gotten back to that area for a while, but will try and get there soon.

I watched the one hypo shorthead give birth last year. That was a sight.
