ID this: Florida king, or Eastern king?

foxturtle Jul 23, 2006 02:13 PM

People say the forum is slow, so I figure thats a good enough reason to post something. This snake was caught by myself in Levy County, FL earlier this year on May 1st. What do you make of it? Certainly, it is black and with yellowish bands, has no interband lightening, and has a band count below what is typical for a Florida king. She's got an incomplete/broken chain pattern. Maybe its a Florida, maybe an eastern, maybe an intergrade? I don't know the "official" status of kings in that specific area... so yeah, what are your ideas?

I don't know where Levy County, FL is. But according to kryscos paper, floridana only come up about 3/4 of the way up the state.

Looks like an Eastern to me Nick especially since it is already an adult and found that far north in FL. I've gotten a few Easterns over in Taylor Co. which is not too far from where you found yours.

I would call that an eastern.

That's what it is, yeah, yeah - that's the ticket!
But seriously - It IS an Eastern (in my experienced opinion)

-i think to try to narrow it down as just one or the other-is kind of silly,as you know what a typical eastern looks like, same with a 'typical' floridana.and that's neither.or,both.

She sure does look like an eastern. I believe the general population of kings where I found her is an intergrade population with a heavier eastern king influence, similar to the Pinellas County kings. Maybe I'll just call her an eastern king so I can add that to my lifelist.

I have a king that looks very similar to that one, same markings and color paterns, except ours is darker. When we got it we were told it was an "Easter Chain-King"?? Anyway, I'm replying because we are looking for someone to adopt it. I posted an adoption add on this site, but it hasn't been screened yet. If anyone wants a snake that looks very much like this one, email me at a_wasted_mind@yahoo.com and I'll send you some pictures. He is free to good home, just asking that you help make arangments for getting it. Sex is unknown for certain, and it is 3 and 1/2 feet long. Just under 2 years old.
