Below is a photo of my painted today, upset because the snapper took away his largemouth bass. I still need to get rid of that snapper, my painted is way too brave around him. The link is a photo of the theft in action.

Wow that snapper is getting big. I would seperate them too. In the first picture it looks like a slab of wood. What is that? I would like to do a natural basking area and the driftwood idea does not seem to be going well. I was wondering if someone could give me more suggestions on how to do an easy basking area for two turtles. I would even be willing to do two basking areas for them. Right now I have one of those plastic shelves with the suction cups. I have the four big rocks inder the leg so it can be higher. They can both fit on there nicly but I really want to get rid of the shelf and make it more natural in there. I also want to get a better filter before I add fish and plants.
The stones I use on the bottom of the tank are the decorative stones you get at the $1 store. I boiled them to get off all the oil and dirt. Boy were they oily and dirty! After 14 bags I now have a single layer of them filling the bottom of the tank. I used to use gravel in their other tanks but they used to snap at them (tried to eat them) so I figured it would be safer to use bigger stones. These stones give the tank a decorative touch.

The chunk of wood in that photo is a piece of driftwood, not so much a basking area, but more decoration and cover. It also keeps my plants from doing laps around the tank. I will be getting new wood eventually, and I think I will poly it all next time.

Also, I rigged up my old filter temporarily, and the water cleared up overnight.
