Beautys or Bulls?

Kris Diekema Jul 23, 2006 04:36 PM

I may be asking you to compare Apples and Oranges here, but I'm wondering what you all think is a better choice, a Bull Snake or a Beauty Snake? I'd like something a little larger than a Milk or King but with the same personality. Are Beauty snakes more arboreal than some other large rats or Bulls? Are Beautys more flighty and unpredicatable?

I wouldnt compare either with milks or kings. If your just looking for a move up to something bigger I would go with a male bairds, tex, black, glade, russian that you could keep at the same humidity level.
From personal experience Ive never been able to hand hold a beauty without getting tagged.lol.It could just be me.Im sure someone will post that they calm down with handling.
I do like bulls and pits in general, but they can also have an attitude.Ive had a pair of northern pines for a week now and they both have calmed down alot with a minimal handling. Good luck in whatever you choose.

Thanks for the reply. I think I'm gonna go with the bulls, I'm seeing more bits of info about Beautys being a little more snippy, with Bulls and Pits just bluffing a lot. Although I dont know whats worse, having a snake threaten and bite or have it threaten all the time and never know when its gonna bite. Lesser of the two evils I guess. lol.

If you get a chance hit a reptile show.I always talk to the vendors and get there advice. You can get lucky and find a puppy dog tame pit or ratsnake.I always handle before I buy.

That's a good looking snake. Is it a prairie king?

A neighbor of mine claims he just about runs one over every morning on his bike ride.He has run over several.lol. The one in the pic was hit right behind the skull with his back wheel. We kept it for a couple of weeks and he let it go were he found it.It hammered mice without a problem.
He now has a pair of juvies he is raising. They are mellow, slow moving, alert, and they dont musk.

great idea but there is shows that go on and shows / vendors implicating no handle before a anti-bacteria wash . LOL ! I do agree that handling reptiles might close the deal but in my last venture of breeding and the selling of venomous at shows.......just some fun here folks.

I have two bulls and they are fantastic. Much more fun than corns or kings. The other good thing about them is they generally give you a few warnings before you get tagged. First warning: Rattling tail: Second warning: A very loud hiss. You couldn't miss this sound for sure. Third warning: The closed mouth bite or head bunt. Once they become used to you the only time mine become nasty is when they turn blue.
