How long do you wait before a 4th meal

Rottenweiler9 Jul 23, 2006 04:58 PM

My Emerald pooped white stuff after the second feeding and it has been 14 days since her 3rd meal. How long do I wait before giving him his 4th. I tried taking him out and giving him exersise. Do I keep that up until he goes?

bout 15-20 mins in the shower should do the trick. seems to stimulate them to go.

She's a growing girl. If she were mine and she was hungry, I'd feed her now.

3 meals and a defecate. prolapse is something you do not want.

I agree. Prolapse would not be good. Nor regurge. Nor obesity. But I guess I'm confused. The animal ate 2x, passed cloacal matter, ate a third time and is awaiting only the fourth meal since you had the snake? If those are the circs, I would feed. But the bottom line is that the decision is the keeper's. They are not the easiest species to keep, but the don't explode if you make a mistake either.

So, I put him in the shower last night and had some poop come out. So I am going to feed him tonight. He looks like he is always hungry, its been 3 weeks, while I was awaiting the poop.

You are correct Bill. He ate 2 times and white stuff and then I awaited after the 3rd meal to feed again.

What happens if you keep feeding without a poop? I agree with Bill that he is growing and the food is on the smaller side so I was going to give him a 4th meal this weekend anyway.

The undesirable effects of feeding too frequently without an interviening bowel movement include: vomiting, impaction, prolapse, obesity and resultantly, suffering and death.
The "no more than 3 meals w/o BM" is a good one. The rule is of course ETB/GTP lore, and if violated on occasion, your snake won't instantly croak. However it is a good rule. I use a log to record feedings and more importantly, BMs. With the rest of my collection, I am much more casual; if I thaw out too many rats, I can always find somebody who can chow down on the excess (but I try to alternate pigs). I would never play that game with emmies.
The shower advice was good and it worked for you. Like other snakes, exercise will help in this regard too. Tree boas are way different than other snakes in many cool ways, but they become pretty simple with time. Just don't overfeed.
