off topic: Bird Snakes

reptiles_CR Jul 23, 2006 06:54 PM

We have been working with Pseustes poecilonotus "Bird Snakes" here in Costa Rica for 5 years. We've bred them several times too. They are awesome, beautiful snakes. Is anyone else interested in them? This is our first time on a forum. Apologies for being off topic. We thought this might be the best place to post. Quetzal & Monica

any pics? do they look the same as p. sulfurus?

reptiles_CR Jul 23, 2006 09:54 PM

No, P sulphureus are completely different. We played with a stunning individual in Trinidad last year that was about 9 feet long. Black and yellow-orange. Amazing animal. Ours get around 7 feet max and are not as heavy-bodied. Also ours come in some very delicate and vibrant color phases. The light yellow phase that we posted is just part of the spectrum. They come in orange and blue, red and dark silver, platinum (almost white), pink and lavender. They're really gorgeous.

There's a guy on here that hasn't been on here for awhile named Bill Reid that keeps sulphurus. Hope all is well.

You guessed right, this has become the default "large colubrid" forum. Besides, it is slow so off topic is better than no topic at all.

There is only one rule. Post some pictures of your snakes!

Just kidding, not a rule, just a request...

reptiles_CR Jul 25, 2006 11:30 AM

Hi Mike, I wanted to post a photo before but didn't know how

Mike Meade Jul 25, 2006 08:14 PM

Thanks for the picture. Wow, now I have to rethink skipping Daytona!

I hope you decide to hang out here and tell us more about those great looking snakes.

Quetzel and Monica,

Great to see you posting here and I am certain you will be bombarded with questions before long, as it's rare to have someone posting from within the native Drymarchon realm. As Mike has indicated, the indigo forum has become a default stop for anyone working with large and unusual Colubridae.
While I have seen Pseustes poecilonotus offered in the US, on rare occasions, and I know of one illegal shipment containing a few specimens, which was seized entering the US from Bolivia, I am not familiar with anyone directly involved with the husbandry of the species here. I know Bill Reid, along with a couple of others, are working with P. sulfurous, as has already been mentioned, but P. poecilonotus are far and few between here. Any plans, on your part, to help eradicate the lack of this species here in the US??
Great to hear from you and I hope to be visiting your facility within the next year…

Best regards,

Jeff

Hi Jeff, thanks for the message. We have nearly finished an article on the husbandry of P poecilonotus and will have our offspring at Daytona this year. Quetzal & Monica

Hello,
I will be heading to Costa Rica the day after tomorrow to participate in a turtle conservation program in Gandoca. I wish I could take a day and visit the serpentarium, but I will be going with some people from my school and I don't think we will be spending much time at all in San Jose. Anyway, welcome to the forum, maybe if I'm lucky I'll see some cool snakes while I'm there!

Hi Roy,
Our facility is in the Southwestern zone of Costa Rica. We are about a 4 hour drive from San Jose and are close to Dominical, which is south of Quepos and Manuel Antonio. It's a beautiful area and there is some great herping here. There are also at least three different groups who are doing sea turtle conservation in this zone. If you're going to be around, let us know.

Sounds great! Is there a way I can contact you by phone if I visit your area?

bthacker Jul 25, 2006 06:23 PM

Pretty sweet place place they have there! Make it a point to stop there. The beaches near Dominical are beautiful....

Best serpentarium in Costa Rica but I think I only visited 5.....

Hey Brett,
I was looking at your ad in the classifieds for those blacktails(I wish I had the space for them, but right now I'm in the middle of a move and I don't know if I'll have room for them where I'm going, otherwise they'd be mine LOL), anyway, I noticed it said you were in Northern California. I live in the Santa Rosa area, whereabouts are you?

bthacker Jul 25, 2006 07:50 PM

I am near Sacramento in Rocklin......If you can find room I will make a killer deal!!! I found out today I am going to Daytona!

Royreptile Jul 26, 2006 01:01 AM

If you still have them, or any others of those beautiful blacktails you produce, when I move I will definitely consider it! Daytona, that sounds awesome! I hope you have a great time, be sure to get some pics if you can! I should know if I'm moving within the next couple of months, actually, the house I'm in right now is in escrow but last time it fell through so we'll see!
