Indian Pythons

ukborneoguy Jul 23, 2006 08:34 PM

Do many people on these forums keep these? If so what are their temperements like and do they grow as fast as Burmese do? I've heard the average size is 13ft but there really isn't any decent info on the web about them.

Hi,
I am not trying to be a downer. The Indian Python is not legal to keep in the states. You need a permit to keep one.
If you get cought with one it is a big fine.

I'm not in the states and as long as you have the CITES papers they are very available to keep here in the UK.

I didn't know you absolutely needed a permit to keep them, learn something new every day. I thought all you needed was the permit to transport across state lines and maybe local permits(if required in your area).Good thing I don't have an Indian

There has been extensive discussion on the legal niceties of keeping Indian Pythons on this Forum. Its somewhat arcane, but in essence one can keep them if the animals are obtained in the same state as they are kept (provided local laws don't prohibt in some way). Difficulties arise when one desires to transport across state lines. The Federal regulations are in place to make this happen legally, but there was some disagreement about how difficult it is to comply with this act.
I hope I have remembered this accurately. If not, please jump in here and set the record straight.

Indian python laws in the usa are not that complicated. It took me a while to figure most of it out but if you live somewhere and there is a breeder that breeds indians and he or she has the cbw permits you can legally buy one off of them and not have to have permits for them. California is a big plus cause prehistoric pets breeds them and if you buy from them you dont have to have a permit but you have to have permits to ship across state lines so they dont ship there indians unless you prove you have your paperwork. So technically there not completly illegal. You can still own one you just either have to get the cbw permit or you have to find a breeder near you that has one.

Neither the breeder, seller, or buyer need the CBW permit to complete the transaction if both are residents of the same State. If the Indians are to be transported across State borders, both seller and buyer need to have CBW permits. Because P. molurus molurus was included within the U. S. Endangered Species Act, it is the managing authority and was initially setup to control interstate commerce of Act listed species. As such, and due to the involvement of the Commerce Department, there is one interesting hitch. If no money or trade items are involved or change hands, and the Indian is strictly a gift from one party to the other, they may be legally transported across State borders without the CBW permit. I know that sounds crazy, but that is the law as it currently stands.

It seems too obvious...so I'd better ask. If a proud legal owner of P. molarus moves to another state and assumes residency there, no paper is required. True?

no money or trade goods are being exchanged or any other type of transaction is taking place. Therefore, the authority to control their movement under the Endangered Species Act has been removed. Good question.
