Siphlophis cervinus eating

Oxyrhopus Jul 23, 2006 08:43 PM

Here is a small snake of the American Tropics that is also rear fanged and subdues its prey with venom and constriction. More likey holds onto the prey with coils and chews its prey until it passes. Notice the dark areas on the neck of the anole. That is where it did most of the chewing to envenomate. It took about 3-5 minutes of holding on but usually takes less time. It seems the snake knows it has provided sufficient venom to kill its prey and releases its mouth grip and holds the prey until it is assured its dead and then slowly begins to consume it. Neat stuff.
