New Momma

silver_rose Jul 23, 2006 09:26 PM

I have just become the new lucky Jungle Carpet Python owner and I have a few questions. She's about 3 months old... since the person I bought Abby from said she had all ready eaten quite a few times. (In fact she was the biggpes JCP there) and she is about to go into her first moult. (I have noticed that her eyes are starting to cloud up and a few of her scales seem to be a bit rough to the touch.)

I was reading earlier that JCP's hardley ever go into their water dish unless they are frightened and/or have mites. I've checked her over and she doesn't seem to be infested with them (but she is going to go have a check-up soon) and I could hardly believe she was frightened. On the drive home she was everywhere. My boyfriend was driving us home (we have just acquired two greenbottle blue tarantula's) so I had her out to check out everything. So I figured that she was maybe nervous, a new home and surrondings I'm sure that will stress any one out, and she would be better by the end of the night maybe tomorrow. Am I right? Should I be overly worried about her? She doesn't seem to act sick. She has no foam coming out of her mouth and her gums seem to be fine. (I had the distinct pleasure of watching her yawn. Its amazing how big they can open their mouths.)

Next is I have her in a temporary habitat. Just has a tree branch, a bowl and some peat moss to help with the humidity. When I do upgrade her to her regular habitat what should I use I was looking at these mesh(?) cages that you would use for Iguana's and have that be her "tree home" since these snakes are aboreal. Or should I just go for the normal glass/plastic cages that everyone else is using? And where should I keep the humidity for her? I keep reading around 60% Humidity but I'd rather get some info from people that have these type of snakes and what their snake seems to like it at best. Naturally Abby will be a little bit different but a guestamit would be nice.

Is there anything I need to know about possible feeding problems? The breeder I got her from said she was a very good eater but a new situation could possible change that. Is there any shedding problems I need to watch out for too? I know soaking her for 10-15 minutes will help with her shedding. But is there anything else I should do for her.

And do I also need to get vitamins for her? Or would she be fine by herself?

Ok, I'm going to stop with the questions for now. Hehe.. sorry if I blew anyones mind away. I'm gonna go read some more about my baby. Thanks to all who reply ahead of time. I really appreciate it.

Congrats !1 Now we need pictures. I have severly different Morelias and most of them lover to "relax" in the water and I don't have any mite problems. If you have mites and your snake is in the water dish you will find little black specs (like poppie seeds) in the bottom of the bowl. I usually (not always) give my snakes a week to chill out before I handle them.

I keep the humidity somewhere between 45 - 65 %. Stay with the glass/plastic cages I have heard of snakes getting rub marks from the Wire mesh cages and unless you live in Florida where the humidity is real high there would be anyway of keeping the heat and humidity regulated.

That is a beuty that you have there. Gorgeous animal.

I'm getting the pictures right now. Some of them aren't that good but I have two favorites. One you can't get much detail out of but on her head you can see her "skull" pattern. I thought that was kinda funny.

Ohh... And here they are.... "hehe... they were downloading"

She seems to be fine now. We went out and got her a fake vine for her to play in. And she loves the thing. She didn't want to come off of it for anything in the world it seems. And we're switching the scorpions water bowl with hers because there's is a little bit bigger and heavier. So if she wants to go relax in it she has a bit more room.

Yet again this picture has a horrible perception to it. Silly girl wouldn't stop moving. How do you all get such close ups of your snakes??? Mine is waaaaaay to active and happy to be out of the cage. LOL.

And a full picture of her.

I love how the front of her body is speckled and the back of it goes into more of a stripe. My boyfriend likes the speckle and I like the stripes. I'm glad we got a snake that has BOTH of them on there. Hopefully she'll keep it when she moults. *prays*
