Home Depot, $70.00 hatchling rack

vichris Jul 23, 2006 10:45 PM

I've been wanting to build a hatchling rack that I can keep my young ones in over the winter. My wife and I were at Home Depot about three weeks ago and I saw this C20 shelf with A50 precut shelves. I used my boxes as a template and just built it from the bottom up screwing the shelves in place as I added each level. I prefer not to use lids. Only the top shelf has lids but they still slide in with a snug fit. The boxes were extra. I bought them at the local discount store cheap. I'll use heating pads on the back during winter.

45 1/2 high
14 1/2 deep
24 wide
4 inches between shelves.

It's a hatchling rack. So I built it to hold these small shoe boxes. You can build yours to fit the size containers you choose.

The nice thing about this rack is that you can build it to suit. Assemble the sides and the bottom shelf. Place one (or two or three) of your boxes on the shelf. Put the next shelf on the box(s). Check for fit, not to tight not to loose. Screw shelf in place. Repeat the steps working you way up until complete. You may want to do some preliminary measurement and assemble the side and bottom shelf temporaraly so that you can assemble the whole rack with ALL of the boxes and shelves NOT screwed into place so that you are sure the top shelf is not going to be to loose or to tight.

Thanks Mike. I'd be doing you a disservice to ship them. These are to easy to build. Plus you know how much they cost and I couldn't charge you $350.00, LOL.

Really just go ask them for their C20 closet shelf and A50 precut shelf inserts. They come in white or maple. I would buy my boxes before hand too, just to make it easy to build. It literally took me 45 min to put together. The only thing I'll do different on the next one is that I'll start that bottom shelf a 1/4 inch higher so that I wont have to use lids on the boxes on the top shelf.

I knew you knew. I'm just trying to give you some confidence that you can build that rack pretty easily. You're good people Mike Bodner.
