Care to see some Red Group Jungles...

gray Jul 24, 2006 01:44 AM

Thursday night my Red Group female Anika birthed 17 large, healthy babies on day 106 POS. No slugs. A superb litter for the first time Mom. Her post-birthing weight was 8.5 lbs. She began the breeding trial at 10.5 lbs. I raised Anika slowly for 4.5 years before I was satisfied that she was ready for this. She definitely rewarded my patience....the litter is everything I could have hoped for. There appears to be at least 8 Jungles in the litter. I believe these are the first Red Group Jungles but I could be mistaken. See how gorgeous Mom looks moments after delivering babies at 5 years of age. The Jungles are exquisite.....bright, clean, colorful. Check out the sibling comparison photo for those that still don't accept that the Jungle gene is good for much more than altering the pattern. Mom was very neat about it. She left a tidy little pile and she didn't have a drop of birthing fluid on herself. The easist cleanup that I have ever had. I handled her immediately and gave her congratulations in the form of two rats. Very rewarding night and lots of fun. You can see more photos at the link below.

On a related note, I haven't been posting much lately but I did see some controversy about the breeding of an 18 month old female. I'm no expert but I do have concerns. Inexperienced hobbyists will read about this one success and think that it is attainable with any female. What they don't read about are the hundreds of young females that die as a result of impatient keepers who powerfeed their animals. Naturally, success stories are posted but people don't tend to post about the ones that are fertilizing their yard. In my opinion, overfeeding is a plague in this hobby and something we should not be proud of. I should have kept my mouth shut. Well, enjoy some photos:

Gray....those are some amazing animals!! Congratulations again and you definitely deserve a great litter like that. Your points are valid and it's unfortunate that folks do powerfeed and will continue doing so...... as long as the almighty dollar is dangling in front of their face. It's good to have folks like you in the hobby!

Cheers-

Brett

what are you doing up? Isn't it like 3AM where you are at? I guess I wouldn't be able to sleep either with a litter like that!!!

Those babies are AMAZING!!!

CONGRATULATIONS!!

Glad to see you grow your boas slowly too. That litter was really worth waiting for. I'm sure she'll give you many more.

I agree with you about breeding a female at a young age. While they can produce at that age...........I honestly don't think they should.
Great animals!!

Major Congrats They are some of the best Jungles I have seen. The color is just outstanding. I cant wait to see them after they shed.

Also I totally agree with you on the editorial about breeding young and overfeeding. I think even feeding on the weekly or 10 day "standard" we are probably still overfeeding our boas. To attain breedable size and muscle tone in 18 months is the extreme exception rather than the rule. Anyway congrats again they are true beauties. Vinnie Caruso

I am amazed to see animals like those. F1 Jungles!! WOW.
In terms of breeding Females too early, I totally agree.
But then again it is your animal and you could breed it as often and as early as you want.

I do believe it is a first. And may I add, the results are incredible. I fully expect these to be the prettiest Jungles ever produced.

I would do crazy things for one of those kids....

Congrats again! It takes a lot for my jaw to hit the floor these days, but you managed it with ease....

You can really see the influence of the red group in those jungles. The pastel characteristics and the crispness are why I like jungles. Striping is just a bonus in my opinion. Great jungle stock Gray. Congratulations!

Really really nice, great female too, she looks amazing for being in the gravid colors. Congrats! You always produce some killer babies!

.....for your supportive and generous comments. I feel very, very lucky to have a litter like that born at my house. It never gets old seeing new life arrive.....especially when you personally find them to be mezmerizingly beautiful. Glad that some of you like them as well.
