dietary help

SlayerGal Aug 02, 2003 11:37 PM

I recently posted some questions about diet. After talking w/some people I went to out and bought some better food but thought I'd run it by others and see what they had to say. I've started to feed my Eyptian Uro mustard greens, dandelion greens, dried lentils, and the occasional edible flower (pansies. I was wondering if this sounded like an ok diet. I was also wondering if you could freeze Mustard and Dandelion greens? I can never use all the greens I end up buying (I haven't found a place that will let me only take little of each, I have to buy big amounts of each), and it's frustrating. I thought maybe I could freeze it so I wouldn't waste so much.
Thanks for your help and welcomes

Try feeding yours bok choy. Mine seems to really like it and it comes in smaller bundles. Dandlions go mushy if you freeze them together in a bunch and I have tried to freeze them on a cookie tray in layers w/ wax paper between them. (someone else said it worked) But I have found that they are mushy when thawed out and my uro will not touch them with a ten foot pole! LOL Good luck!

Hi,

Greens don't freeze well at all, they just turn into mush and the uros won't touch them. Talk to the produce managers at your local stores, sometimes they will give you free "trimmings" from the greens they get in. I have a store that would give me huge boxes if I wanted them. Of course the fact that it is free will cost you a lot more in time. You have to go through the boxes and take out just what you want and trim and clean it. I take the leftovers outside and put them out for the rabbits and gophers. You can also try going to a "high end" grocery store rather than a chain if you have one around your area, sometimes these people are happier to serve the customer. I have to confess that I have pulled a few greens from a large bunch, put them in the plastic bags and went to pay for them. Any greens that are sold by the pound shouldn't make a difference. Good Luck!

Wild Oats health food store has bulk gourmet greens and you can pick through them and get the ones you like out like raddichio and some other exotic greens. They sell mustard greens in grocery stores here in the south frozen and I've tried them on my uros and beardies and I agree they're not interested in them, unfortunately. What about sprouting some of the seeds that they eat? I accidentally did when some of mine got left out in the rain. I didn't keep it up because I have plenty of greens right now and don't really have problems getting them here with the health food store, which gives me free things like carrot tops and romaine and then I buy the bulk stuff above (still 4 bucks a pound). -Lucy
