Hello all,
I have two hatchling honduran milksnakes that are both enclosed in 36Lx16Wx10H terrariums, the substrate I am using is "calcisand" and there hiding spots consist of 1 inch pvc pipe cut to size and a sleeve of a T-shirt...both snakes stay constantly under the T-shirts...the reason I put the T-shirts in there was so they can get used to my smell as they are not accustomed to being handled or even having humans in their presence...they NEVER bask in their basking spots and I'm starting to get worried. To the touch they are cold...I realize all reptiles are relatively cold to the touch but they are more so...they have a wide open terrarium for such little snakes with plenty of room to hide and bask and soak in their water bowls...but they NEVER bask...why is this? I know its not because the basking spots are too hot as I'm only using 40 and 60 watt heat bulbs (1 cage is 40 one 60) any idea as to why they don't bask? I also realize milksnakes and kingsnakes like to hide alot and they feel comfortable hiding but in the wild snakes bask..i've observed this whilst catching snakes...so why don't mine?
I also have a Desert Kingsnake (I realize this should be in the kingsnake forum but its related so I'll post it here anyway) which hides all day long in her pvc pipe...she loves it in there...she never basks either...I even built her a small "jungle gym" out of various pieces of 1/2 inch pvc piping and some 90* bends and "T"s i saw her up on it maybe once...how come she doesn't bask...is it just the way it is or am I doing something wrong?
Thank you for your time,
Ralph
