Southern Ringneck eating live pinky:

Oxyrhopus Jul 24, 2006 05:16 PM

Beefy here has quite the gut and last week for the first try I rinsed a pinky in the sink and threw it in with her and it was gone an hour later. I missed the action. Today I did it again, but this time stood back and watched and took photographs. This pink was alive and not scented. She took it from behind the neck and envenomated the pink and worked her way to the head and started to swallow it while it was still alive. Sad but funny. lol. You can see the venom on the pinks neck. She lives in a 9 inch deli container with a paper towel and rock and water bowl. I had to shoot the pics through the lid, so I apologize for the quality of the shots through the clear plastic lid.

Did the venom take effect or did the pinky go down kicking?

She swallowed the pinky while it was still moving, so I don't think she cared to wait for the venom to take effect, she just wanted to eat and eat and eat.

I have 1.1 Southern Ringnecks, they are doing well on worms, but I may try to switch them to pinks, just to see if I can.

Her babies are fine eating worms and minnows. Its easy to get them to eat a pink. Just get a small enough pink (day old) and freeze it and defrost it and rinse it in the sink and then rub worm goo on it and put it in a bowl of worms and it should be taken. You might have to clip off the front legs of the pink first so it goes down like a worm but I have fed a number of different ringnecks scented pinks.

Is their venom strong enough to kill a pinky? I would imagine it working fairly well on worms and small fish, but it seems like a pinky would be a bit tougher.
