What can I do about this heat?

drasticplastic Jul 24, 2006 05:32 PM

It's 105 in my snake room with no heat on at all, I don't have A/C and the fans just aren't cutting it. My boa has been in his water dish trying to cool down I suppose, I've had him for 3 years and he's never done that before. What can I do to make sure they aren't harmed by this heat wave we're having? I want to mist them to try and keep them cooler, but I'm afraid it'll drive up the humidity in the boaphiles. Any suggestions?

Try a bucket of ice in front of the fan, (kind of a homemade swamp cooler) and close the curtains. Other than that AC is the only way to go.

Hi there,

Power outage huh? Eek.. I hate that. Well.. this is what I
do... I fill 2 litter bottles with cold water, wrap them in a towel and put them into the cages with the boas. Then I try to change them out every 40-60 minutes as they need to be. They will wrap around them or lay next to them usually. When it's too cold and power goes out, I take the heat packs for shipping, again wrapped in a towel, one or two in each cage. I use towels since they seem to dissipate the temps and the snake isn't coming into direct contact with the suddenly different temps.
Good luck!
I've been lucky (knocking on wood) that I haven't had any power outages in the summer here in Vegas.

oops, just realized, it wasn't a power outtage... I think the other idea about cool water coming through the fan is a good idea as well!
Make sure all the windows are covered in the house as well, keep the sun and heat out as much as possible from any other sources.
Okay, that's it.. good luck again!

Fill water into the bigest cap-tight bottle that you can find. freezed it then put it inside the cage on top of some type of newspaper. Two bottles of a galon size should last about 8-10 hrs. It will bring the temp down to about 92-94. This work best with the Vision cage or similar type.

stick it in your window to the snake room......if the stores aren't all sold out.

I am shocked that your Boas are not dead. I had a thermostat failure about twelve years ago and my Boa room only went to 104 degrees for a few hours and I lost a huge number of animals. These were all babies in a tiny room. You have to put in an air conditioner as quickly as you can. I can't believe they are not dying. Keep in mind, they are the same temperature as the room temp. 105 degrees is really really hot. I would sell my car to get the money for an air conditioner. Better hurry and good luck!
