ig bloating - causes/cures

hummingbird2 Aug 03, 2003 12:08 AM

the iguana i am currently caring for that has mbd has been bloated for the past week or so. is this normal for iguanas with mbd? what could be causing it? what could/should i do to help him relieve this? i've been massaging his belly a few times each day and each time i do he 'burps' as well as passes gas from the other end several times each. each time he does this he 'deflates' a little and becomes less bloated. how do i get rid of his gas and what is causing it?

he's getting an 'iguana milkshake' because of the difficulty swallowing due to the mbd. this 'milkshake' is like 75% collard greens, 20 percent baby food (squash and peas), and 5 percent chopped yellow squash/zucchini/and apple. there's also about a teaspoon of reptivite c/p 2/1 in there (there's about a cup and a half of 'milkshake'). oh and a little water. he's also been outside for at least an hour every day for 3 or 4 days and he's under a uvb flourescent when he's inside (except between 1 and 8 AM). he's also got a heating pad under the tank on medium - it just raises the temp in the tank about 3 degrees above room temp.

Are you making his 'shake in a blender or a juicer? I'm wondering if its in a blender, and too much air is getting whipped into it... its about the only thing I can think of. That, or he's not used to eating good food, and its making him a bit gassy as his gut flora adjusts. You can give him probiotics n all that kind of stuff, but at the end of the day it should sort itself out. Think about what happens if you go a long time without eating certain foods, and then you eat them, same reaction. Poor guy Sounds like he's rather uncomfy. Nice warm baths might help too, let him soak in a tub. Swimming around a kiddie pool might help, movement often helps get gas moving out of an animals system.

hey thanks! the bloating has gone away, though. *whew* but he has been on this diet the whole time i've had him (about 4 months) so i don't think it's a diet change. i did use a blender and there are a lot of bubbles - could be the cause except he had the gas before i made the "milkshake" out of collard greens, squash, baby food, etc. he had the gas 2 days before he got the "milkshake" and the gas went away about 24 hours after he started getting the "milkshake". he did get warm water baths, as well. oh well at least it's gone, now. thank you!

Glad to know he's feeling better Its so hard when pets aren't feeling well. My poor old dog got caught up in barb wire this weekend, luckily her coat protected her from more than a minor scratch or two, and I got her lying down fast, but she pulled a muscle in her shoulder and in her back and she's very sore Couch-potater rest for at least a week for her!
