not a corn but thought I'd share because

wisema2297 Jul 24, 2006 07:16 PM

this is a rarely seen species in the wild. Aught to be a law against this!! Looks as if someone freeked out when they saw a snake entangled in the net and just dropped it. If only they knew how rare it is to catch a glimpse of these beauties in the wild!! I had never seen one before so it now resides in my freezer until I can have it preserved.

That's a shame. I live pretty close to you and I've never laid eyes on one myself. Was that in Hanover?

finding lots of rainbow snakes around Norfolk when I was in the Navy back in the late 70's. The first one I ever saw was in my back yard in Oceanview. One of my neighbors told me he found a copperhead. So he takes me to this peice of wood and tells me its under it. I lifted the wood and there sat a rainbow snake. I didn't know what it was at the time but I knew it wasn't a copperhead. I picked it up and went back to my house and got out the trusty north american feild guide. I found lots of earth snakes and a few more rainbow snakes, hog nose, and black rats in the yard and the ajacent lot/creek. Ahhhhh the good old days.

Sorry to see that one died.

I checked the species count that was posted on the Virginia Herpetological Society yahoo group site and it doesn't even list the rainbow has having been found in Hanover County.

Looks like Hanover co. is the extreme western limit according to this range map I have linked below. Have not been to South Anna in a few years. Use to go more back when I lived in Henrico. Anyway, awesome find. Just wish it would have had a happier ending.

Beautiful snake.

Perhaps a local University would be interested in adding your find to its collection. You might also think about contacting CNAH to see if your find might be a range extension.

Damn shame it wasn't still alive.

I really do.....they are so stupid.......

but I have no lisence to harvest them yet....

like my neighbor last night telling me about her fat stupid moron of a brother.......12 1/2 foot black snake attacked him and chased him all the way to the house ,,so he got a can of RAID and squirted the snak's face.....then got in his truck and ran over it twice....

bet he felt like a real man........

duh......

.........cool snake.........sad they didn't let it go.......

.........you can skin it,scrape it.,,and tan the hide yourself.....get one step snake tan from a good taxidermist........costs like less than $15 a quart........don't let them rip you off......

if they tan it it will be like $8 to $10 a foot......

stuffing it will cost more and most guys suck at reptiles.........freeze dried is better but still shrinks up too much for my tastes.......

good luck.......
