AUSTRALIAN BROADCASTING CORPORATION 23 July 06 Frogwatch volunteers help keep toads numbers down
Frogwatch organisers say they have captured over 100 cane toads from the Palmerston area in their latest toad bust.
Around 40 volunteers helped out in the cane toad hunt on Friday night.
Frogwatch has adopted a dry season strategy, concentrating on the few remaining wet areas where the toads have to congregate.
Graeme Sawyer from Frogwatch says the latest bust is encouraging.
"It was a good indicator that we're getting on top of it I think, 82 of the animals were sort of half grown, which are things that would've bred around the Palmerston area this year," he said.
"It's really good to get them out of the system before they get old enough to breed."
Mr Sawyer says there will be a series of toad busts in the weeks leading up to August 18.
"That is the big toad audit night when we want everybody to get out and check their backyards," he said.
"Then after that night we will have a regular series of toad busts right across the greater Darwin area to try and get the toad population down to near zero before the end of the dry season."
