WTLV (Jacksonville, Florida) 21 July 06 Missing Iguana Found
St. Augustine, FL: A missing iguana recently had a St. Augustine neighborhood on edge. The lizard-like creature escaped from its home and was gone for days. Neighbors feared it would show up on their doorstep.
The Pickets moved into the area recently and brought their three iguanas with them. A baby, a medium size one, and a large iguana named, Tiger.
Jennifer Picket is the owner. She says, "They're so ugly they're cute."
When the largest iguana got out and was loose in the neighborhood for days, some folks were concerned. Joyce Lundgren lives two houses down. She says, "I was scared. Who wouldn't be they look like a dinosaur."
She couldn't believe an iguana could be lurking near her home. Lundgren says, "I don't know anything about them. I don't know what they eat. Do they eat cats? Do they like people? I mean, who knows anything about iguanas."
Iguanas don't eat animals, they're vegetarians. They are harmless and they are legal to have as pets.
Picket was afraid she wouldn't find her beloved pet. "Very worried about her... I was afraid we wouldn't find her. There are other wild animals in our neighborhood like raccoons and cats."
The iguana was missing four days and was eventually found in the neighbor's back yard in a tree, but some neighbors are still concerned.
Lundgren says, "I don't want to know an iguana is loose in the neighborhood. If it gets loose once it can get loose again."
The Pickets say the iguana escaped from a hole in their screened-in porch and they have since fixed it; but they also admit this isn't the first time she's escaped. Hopefully for everyone's sake, it will be the last.
