Lessers vs. Butters

ronin1360 Jul 24, 2006 08:48 PM

I'm just curious, what are the differences between these two snakes? I've heard that the Butters have a bit more yellow coloration but in my experience I'm not sure if I believe this. Check out the Lessers in NERD's book. To me they look exactly like butters (or vice versa). IMO, the amount of yellow pigmentation in lessers and butters seems variable.

So, are there other differences? Both produce lucys- does a super lesser look different than a super butter? Pattern differences?

I know a lot of people are working with lessers and butters this year and I'm just trying to figure how to differentiate one from the other. So, for all of you that believe lessers and butters are different morhps, enlighten me please!

As I understand it, the lesser came from the "Platty Dady", which means it should some how be able to produce a Platty and a whits snake. The Butter doesn't come from a Platty so it could never produce one. Personally, I think the butters look a little better. They're both beautiful snakes. Hope this helps.

RDR produced a platy butter last year by breeding a non lesser platy descendent to a butter. That doesn’t prove that platy and butter are the exact same thing but they do appear to work similarly.

thanks for the responses jesse and randy. after looking at the butter plattys im convinced that lessers and butters are pretty much the exact same snake except that they come from different WC animals:

-lessers and butters look the same (again, check out the lessers in NERDs book. they have some beautiful yellows in them that are supposedly unique to butters).

-lessers and butters have both produced plattys and therefore are reacting to the "hidden platty gene" in the same way.

-both lessers and butters produce lucys

no matter what you call them they are awesome snakes

similar yes. The same NO. Granted you get the occasional lesser with some yellow in them but not as much as the butter. Yes they both reacted with the "hidden" gene in the platty complex but they did so a little differently. You need to remember the phantom reacted with the "hidden" gene too and they are totally different than either of the two morphs but when bred to the lesser it produces a white snake.
