Blue Balls?

kikko Jul 24, 2006 10:09 PM

My leopard gecko's testes (male obviously) are swollen and almost blue in color. Is this a possible impaction or something else? I noticed this condition about two days ago. He hasn't been as active, he is eating and did poop the other day. Just wondering if anyone can give me some help for the little guy! Thanks alot

I can think of two things it might be. Both should be taken very seriously, and a trip to the vet is nessesary.

First, your male may have prolapsed. Do you see anything worm like in the area? It may have become infected, resulting in the swelling and discoloration. If he has prolapsed, he needs vet attention immediatly. From what you're describing, he may need surgury and antibiotics.

Second, he may have developed sperm plugs. The sperm plugs need to be expressed (squeezed out) gently to avoid further problems. Again, from what you've described, it sounds like it may be past that point. The blue color indicates blood is being cut off from the area, which will result in tissue death and infection. Please take it seriously and get him to a vet.

In the mean time, keep his home as clean as possible. Remove any lose substrate and use paper towels. Make sure he has a nice warm spot to lay in...heat will help him fight infection (just don't go above 94 degrees). Good luck!

I appreciate the information and concern. This is my girlfriends gecko .. I have had quite a few geckos but I have never seen anything like this. A friend of mine said the same thing about the infection. I'm leaving it up to her to decide on what to do but I know she will bring him to a vet because she loves the little guy. Again thanks for the information!

Everything I was going to say has already been said... Aside from this:

Those arnt his "balls" they are his hemipenes. In reptiles the hemipenes are near the vent and the testicles are inside the body cavity. A hemipene is a forked penis btw.
