laws in oklahoma

mtndude23 May 20, 2003 02:42 AM

I've been searching this forum and the oklahoma state web site. Even e-mailed the wildlife department there to find out about laws relating to allowed reptiles.
Mostly interested in any laws on gila's and caimans. I might be moving there and would like to find this kind of information out before hand. The only thing I've found out for sure is that if the animals is on federal threaten list you can't have it. Which none of my animals are.
I was just wondering if anyone would know or maybe lives there and can help me find out who else to contact, as the wildlife department won't reply to my e-mails.

Thanks for nay help

Josh

Ok law is pretty simple. For animals non-native to the state, which Gila and Caiman are, as long as they aren't endangered species, there are no state laws prohibiting ownership. However, there may be city laws depending on where you move. I'm surprised no one returned your e-mails. Who did you contact? To keep any reptile, you have to have a hunting license and then you can keep 6 of any one species. They have to be kept so that they can not interfere with native species ie. secure your enclosures. I'm not sure what to tell you on the caiman because I haven't ventured down the croc aisle with them yet but I know to keep my water turtles, I also have to have a fishing license. They might require the same for a caiman. $35 will get you a combined hunting and fishing license though. Now if you want to breed and sell, you have to get a breeders license which is a whole different matter. Where are you looking at moving to in the state?

Another avenue to look down is to ask for the name of the game warden in the area you are wanting to move and call him and ask your questions. He'd be the guy called if someone complained about your reptiles anyway. It's best to become friends from the start.

hope this helps,
e

Paul Moore is the guy to contact. His e-mail address is on the Ok Dept of Wildlife Conservation site. It's possible no one responded if your messages were sent somewhere else because there are several depts without people at the moment due to budget cuts. Messages just end up in cyber land, I guess.
