BAD NEWS. . . (golden corn update)ouch!!

BlueKing Jul 25, 2006 05:02 AM

My apologies to everyone, my son e-mailed me again and said that the golden baby corn has no yellow in it, but did say that it has a nice light grayish color. I don't know what to think except to wait til I get some pics. WOW, that really took the wind out of my sails! And I'm sure most of you were anticipating the same thing I was. My sincere apologies. This was no trick or joke on anyone (I have NO reason for this), as I was also fooled. I'm overseas (in this middle east desert), and had no way of telling for sure, except the exciting e-mail I received from my son.
He just e-mailed me again and said that the some of the golden chips of vermiculite made it appear as if though it had some yellow coloring in its' blotches. SO far, I have one hatchling and three more that should be hatching out any time now. So there is still hope, (if the breeding between mother and son occured). One baby was fully formed and consumed by maggots. I guess my son didn't notice the slugs in the clutch and maybe some of the maggots eventually spread over to one of the good eggs. But I do have last years babies which are ALL near breeding size as I am typing this. So at least by next summer I should have some golden corns, if these remaining three eggs don't turn out golden blotched.
Once again, sorry for the mistake. Too bad I wasn't home, and maybe got a little excited myself when I received the first e-mail from my son. Next time I'll be home AND I won't post nothing untl I have pics!!! Only hoping you can understand an honest mistake was made (and a lesson learned)! But nevertheless: Golden corns ARE still on the way - (just might have to wait a little longer) THANK YOU ALL, and I will keep you posted,

Sorry to hear that. To bad the golden is not a male. We can all come over in the spring and line up the females for him.

Sorry again.

the_Ox Jul 25, 2006 10:12 AM

How do you know the yellow doesn't onset with age, like in many corns with high yellow?

Matt

Blueking Jul 25, 2006 02:23 PM

That possibilty exists. But all of last years' babies are almost 2.5 foot long and are getting more red every time they shed. I will have to wait for pics, since I do have one baby that is mostly grayish looking according to my son - who knows? I also had one very small baby crawl out of its' egg and die the next day. That was kind of weird.

I have GOLD FEVER, Istruck Gold.

OOP, bad info it was pyrite.

Wait, maybe gold inside the pyrite!?

Well, I bought 2 baby okeetees? I use a question mark as they were BLACK. They were fresh from the egg and I have seen they are not in the regular colors till later.

I'm hoping for me it's true, but really hoping for you it happens.

Good luck

I gotta second that.

I've reared a few creamsicles and most had little or no yellow to start, but later as they got more yellow. got that characteristic creamy color.

That may be exactly what you've got with the gray hatchling. In a year you could be looking at a miniature Goldie.

Good Luck!

Well . . . When I get the pics, I'll know. There will be at least SOME orange if it's a normal het baby. All of last year's het babies all had some orange/red in them from the minute they hatched.

HEY..........

baby corns are born ugly brown and dull.........

they grow up to be beautiful oranges and all right?>....

even some good line miamis are dull yet have grey backgrounds...the reddish color takes time....

SOOOO.........keep the odd one.......grey background........

the yellow will grow in and develop maybe?....

sounds good?........

..........makes sence that if one is odd it may turn yellow.....

look at caramels....they are dark ,almost black saddled then turn golden......

.......aaaaaaaaaaaaa.........feel better?......

20% isn't bad

they breed like crazy ...........and............

BlueKing Jul 26, 2006 01:11 AM

Thanks, LOL!
When I get some pics, I'll be able to elaborate further. Until then, I better wait and see. . . My son's been a little slow in responding. I think he's too busy goofing off and chasing girls. But I can't knock him too hard - he's done an exceptioanl job of assisting my wife in my (pretty sizable, aprox 65 snakes, not counting babies)collection of snakes.
I'll be glad when I'm back home, though.

Wow, that's intersting to know. It sucks that the ignorant are still out there killing snakes as usual . . . that's a shame! At least I was able to save ONE and now have 12 more BIG yearlings ready to go next spring! It's only a matter of time. . .

Thanks Don,
Maybe not too much gained - but at least nothing was lost!!!
The golden corn and last years hatch will be ready to go next spring for sure.
